All-Nation/Varney 4-4-0, tender drive, somehow I don't think it's $250 worth of engine.
Opinion.

Not sure of the gearbox....but the MOTOR is worth that, right?

If it runs well, $250 is about right. Not everybody gets bargains like we do. And shipping is reasonable.

Figure somebody can fit a smaller motor inside the shell. I didn't see the coupling either.

I see what looks like a shaft coming from the tender and the loco.
Maybe you connect them with some of Bobs wiper (?) tubing.
Or some other way.

There was a tube. Seen them of Phenolic. Hollow, two slots on each end, fit over the horney balls. Old enough, might have been Bakelite. Didn't see it in the photos.

I have one. Runs like a dream. Lent it to the Museum and they put a hundred thousand scale miles on it.

It looks to be a decent build, but a little roughly handled - probably age. I built and ran one in the 80s. Mine was a good runner too. This one has a more custom mechanism. Mine had an on open gear and worm I think. And mine definetely had an open frame motor in the tender. I sort of remember that my tender motor shaft had a slotted sleeve that mated with the horned ball on the engine. Mine had a huge weight in the cab too to ger the weight back on the drivers. This one has a Pittman can motor and a closed gearbox which might be a CLW Gear box - the earlier brass ones.

Mine with the tender drive easily negociated 36 inch radius curves which I had at the time.

As for price, it probably reasonable at 250-300 I don't think anymore than that. Used AN locos show up at shows at that price all the time. And new kits show up sometimes in the same range.

If I could shave that 30", I might be tempted.

30" is really tight for O Scale. Can you get an 0-6-0 around it without lengthening the drawbar?

The tender drive works well, but there are critical angles for U joints, and I think 30" would exceed any reasonable limit.

Barely. But with persuasion, yes. F3c moguls also just barely. Tighter curve just for the 0-4-0.....

That was my worry point.

Gut the gearbox and motor. Find some old NWSL Flea Drives, stick them in the tender trucks, and no worries.
