Murph, I went to Microsoft with my questions.

It took 4 hours to update and I have a medium-fast internet connection.
If you get a blue screen at the end of the update, don't worry about it, the blue screen, slowly going dark and light, only lasts a minute, then download is finished.
I also got a screen asking for my Microsoft password. The one I have was not accepted. I clicked, "I forgot my password." The screen said it emailed a new password. How stupid was that? I had no access to email because I was blocked from access because my old password did not work.
The solution: hard shutdown. Restart and my old password works again.
There are other methods to get out of an application that blocks your other applications but Hard Shutdown worked this time.
That they felt compelled to go after handful amounts just tells you how ineffective they probably were at interdiction of large amounts.
