Support for the Windows 10 April 2018 Update ends in November 2019.
May I ask for your help in this regard, also?

Murph, I went to Microsoft with my questions.

It took 4 hours to update and I have a medium-fast internet connection.

If you get a blue screen at the end of the update, don't worry about it, the blue screen, slowly going dark and light, only lasts a minute, then download is finished.

I also got a screen asking for my Microsoft password. The one I have was not accepted. I clicked, "I forgot my password." The screen said it emailed a new password. How stupid was that? I had no access to email because I was blocked from access because my old password did not work.

The solution: hard shutdown. Restart and my old password works again.

There are other methods to get out of an application that blocks your other applications but Hard Shutdown worked this time.

Not for long, I'd bet!

Interesting...

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... pdate-says
Steve 2017, 2018, and now, 2019, same problem after update as befoe.
I cannot login after Windows 10 update, says "password is incorrect" This happened in 2017, 2018, 2019. You would think they would have fixed that problem aftr three years of the same problem.
After update on my desktop PC, my login password stopped working. I've already reset my password for my Microsoft accounts but none of the new passwords work either. Not a CAPS lock problem.

Opted to reinstall Windows, removed all apps while keeping my files...NO HELP.. Still have same login problem.

HELP!

Try restarting a few times then try restarting again.

If that does not work:
Try disconnecting from the Internet and try restarting a few times more.

If that does not work, reboot in Safe Mode then try signing in.

If you are still unable to log in, see the following:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

If that does not work - enable to built in Administrator account:

If that does not work, your best course of action is to perform a custom install.

Go to a working computer, download, create a bootable copy, then perform a clean install.

If that does not work, try standing on your head and rebooting.

If that does not work, try turning the computer upsidedown and rebooting,.

If that does not work, buy a new computer.

I would ask if anyone here is having a "Password not recognized" problem after instaling the latest update but if you are then you will not be able to use your computer to answer so forget I wanted to ask.

If all you are doing is email and web browsing, get a chrome book. Since it doesn't do much, it is a lot harder to f up.

I had to take care of Windows, Macintosh, and various flavor of Linux when I worked at UM. The Windows stuff was always a nightmare. Very time Microsoft fixed one thing, they broke two more things in the process. A fair number of systems were "embedded" with anywhere from an $80K to a multi million dollar gizmo attached. We wound up isolating a lot of lab equipment because it wasn't safe to have the machine on the Internet.

OS X and Linux had powerful and reasonably easy to configure firewalls built in. We could do a pretty good lock down on an Ubuntu or Red Hat box in about 10 minutes. Ubuntu's default configure was such that you could come up on the net and do the set ups as the default rules only allowed a few select outbound connections and NO inbound unless you blessed them. Configuring Windows firewall was a nightmare because of all the crazy services that were bolted on to make the crappy apps work. If all you talked to was a properly configured and locked down Windows server, no problem. That was not what most research environments are like, especially when the research involves deep fiddling with the computer and software.

Another option would be buying a Mac CPU and re-using your keyboard and monitor and mouse.

Given the publicity around some of the issues with Windows 10 and its updates, I think many frustrated users are wondering if there isn’t something else they could or should be using. There is no exact replacement for Microsoft Windows. Whether any alternative will work for you depends on that alternative’s characteristics as compared to your needs.

As has been already suggested, the alternatives: Mac OS X, Linux, and Chrome.

Any comments?

As for me, I got stupid. Six months ago I waited two months before updating after I started getting those annoying messages to update. The wait was for Microsoft to get the bugs out. Not remembering any problems last time, I did not wait this round. Oh yeah! Now I remember, never accept anything from Microsoft until they have time to debug it.

I waited to long with my updates. I believe my laptop is not designed to work with windows 10. They really resemble a ford Pinto. Buy a new one every 4 years and don’t smack it in the back.

End users rarely care about the OS per se. They care about the applications that they need to use. In the past you needed Windows to run Office. Once the apps move to the cloud the OS is just a tool to get the machine started and connected to the cloud. Apple split the OS products with IOS for phones and tablets, Google uses cloud connectivity for computers and Android OS for Chrome Books, tablets and phones.

Microsoft almost self destructed trying to shoe horn Win 8 into everything. Since Win 8 was only their second worst OS (Vista. Number one with, no one even mentions it anymore) they were able to recover by fixing the front end and start to seriously patch all of the holes left over from Win 3.1 and 95 and call it 10. Most of the patch issues are related to the security changes.

If the computer hardware was designed for 10 you may be better off backing up your files and App's and just wipe/reload. The increased security makes patching problematic if you try to skip some. I used to try to wait for the third day/ 1 week re-release to try to avoid the really bad stuff to get fixed.

BTW we found that Red Hat had similar issues with release updates. Hold off to X.3 before even trying to install/run. They also tended to do better with the odd numbered major OS, e.g. 4 not so hot, 5 great, 6 beats a poke n the eye, 7.3 decent.

Yes, Win 8 was a horror only surpassed by Vista. Had a wretched laptop with that on it and my Mil's laptop still has that on it and only recently have we been able to pry it our of her hands. I've stayed at Win 7 and am not looking forward to whenever I might be forced to move to 10 or whatever comes next. Worse bit of this is just as you state - all the applications are in the cloud and the current version of the office applications there are not very good.
