That's really horrible. The Japanese seem to know more about designing against earthquakes, than flooding.

Strange too given that the islands seem to be regularly pummeled with cyclones and hurricanes....

I heard today that an important reason the boys were able to stay well for so long was that they availed themselves of water that trickled thru the rock above them into their chamber. Apparently, this was yet another demonstration that we can go without food for a longer period than we can go without water.

The water they were able to have must have been pretty pure, passing thru all that filtering rock strata.

Isn't that , in effect, having "Artesian Well-water" ? My hometown in western PA always said it had such water and didn't need to take water from the Monongahela River for human consumption and use.

True.

I had a further lesson in that fact when I got poisoned this past April. Having had no sleep nor anything to eat or drink that stayed in me, for four days and nights, constantly emptying out my system by mouth and intestines, I was near-collapse. When I finally presented myself at the ER, and told the ER staff I had not kept even a teaspoon of water down, they said, after several tests, that I was dying, that if I had waited one more day to go to the hospital, I would have died. It was the aggregate of having had no fluid kept in me, via foods or beverages, that seemed to be the "deal-breaker."

You waited four days to get help with food poisoning? Well, this is in the right thread.

True, Roy. You are right. I kept being hopeful that it would clear up. I kept emptying out so thoroughly and with such violence that I figured I was empty of the poison.
I've posted this personal experience here so others would be warned/advised by my stupidity and make better decisions for themselves should such a calamity ever befall them.

Thanks very much, HONDO. I can see by the information stated in the first link that I was, indeed, just as the ER staff said, dying. Not only was I taking no water in and retaining it. I was blasting it out at both ends, constantly.

I finally woke up to what had been happening to me.

Unfortunately, this is much more common than many know. Jack in the Box had a couple rounds with this. More recently, it was Baja Fresh. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if many on this board have suffered food poisoning. I've had it several times.

Actually, I thought the big recent episode was Chipotle, but it's a lot more common than most think.....and it shouldn't be at all in this country, but people want cheap fast food and are willing to compromise on safety.

Actually, the restaurant that poisoned me was a favorite because of its tasty food and favorite dishes we had become accustomed to ordering.

My wife and I have no interest in "fast-food" establishments. Except for Dairy Queen.

It was a Sunday on which we had gone to the restaurant in mid-afternoon and enjoyed the food,, as usual. Prices are not a big concern of ours (though, I must admit, we did discontinue patronizing  one particular restaurant because they were charging $49 for a single steak.) Flavor and variety and pleasant service and ambiance are priorities. Safety is implicit in our choices, which is why we were so surprised by what befell me. She didn't get sick. She had no salad.

The food was so enjoyable, that I decided to order a couple of their side-dishes - salads, one with chicken pieces in it - as Take-homes, for consumption later in the week. Sunday's meal there was digested normally. On that Monday, I ate the larger of the two salads, the one with the chicken bits, at mid-afternoon. By 7pm, I had to rush out of a meeting at our parish, leaving my wife to continue her meeting but find a ride home, and went home to expel a startling amount of swamp-green-sludge that was expelled out of both ends, almost nonstop. I had eaten nothing else that day but that salad.

By Tuesday, we had started to hear in the News about that Romaine lettuce alarm.

Which really isn't the point - safety was still compromised and Romaine lettuce that was shipped and served in many places caused a major episode that should never have ever happened in the US. We as a nation do not protect our food chain anywhere as it should be - it and water are really national security issues.

Impressive, in several ways. However, the following would turn me off: (Out of my league)..."Bone-in Filet, $69.50....Wagyu Tomahawk Chop, $95... I leave such establishments to my betters.

They do have lesser cuts, but it is a place for that extravagant event. I ate there several years ago in a member of an Editorial Board' private party in the vault room in the basement. I ate there a few weeks ago as a guest of a research consortium that I will be consulting for - it was actually somewhat restrained, not excessive per person, and very good. I will go back with my wife next time in Philly, just to make a special night of it all.
