Playing presently (01:00 04FEB17) in LooperLand (MI).
Worth the watch!
Lots of pix & history of 19th century street railways.
Short synopsis:
Frank Sprague invented a self regulating motor (constant speed under varying loads,
(1st 'Oddessy' motor??))still used today.
He & his motor was used for several for several street RYs in VA & elsewhere,
as well as for the Boston subway.
Sprague worked for Edison for a while, designed his motor in his spare/off time,
quit to prevent Edison from claiming credit/Patent on his motor.
1St 45 min. of the program is history, a bio of Sprague, & the reasons/necessity for a subway in Boston.
1st demo of his motor was on a flatcar for J. Gould.
(Wonder if this was where JLC got his idea for a motorized gondola{??}).
Sparks scared Gould away from financing Sprague.
An above-ground electric Ry was planned & built to eliminate congestion in downtown Boston before the subway,
but a wheel spark near a leaking gas line sent several trolleys skyward, (as well as a few patrons/bystanders,
...hense the subway.
250K people rode the Boston subway the first day, 50 million the first year.
Some consider Sprague's motor as an equal to Ford's car & the Wright Bros. airplane.
