Hobo Jungle
Re: Hobo Jungle
Agree
Agree
Disagree.
Chaos is viewpoint of a dedicated 3 railer. Insulated wheels, one outer rail hot, wiring for turnaround loops, metal turnout crossing point is a short circuit, etc., can be very confusing. None of those proplems when both outer rails are common.
So I just discovered.

Gee... I thought you'd be able to figure out that putting all of the insulated wheels on the same side might be considered "positive",
Do not wait to strike till the iron is hot; but make it hot by striking.
Re: Hobo Jungle
Thought of it the moment Andre mentioned red hot couplers. Extrapolated from hot couplers to real hot boxes on a model train, but I was thinking of one truck getting turned 180, thus a possible hot steel center channel on my wood and metal Athearn kit. Maybe two rail trucks can't turn 180 like some three rail trucks? Yes, getting one axle turned 180 in the truck would be interesting also, even on a plastic model, especially in lead (Pb) trucks.
Case in point, this 6465 tank car is shipped with its trucks rotated 180 degrees--won't fit in the box otherwise.

In two rail, usually not unless the car is a hermaphrodite design that has the centre sill removed from the area of the bolsters so it can also be sold as a three-rail product.
Regarding the wiring et al for two rail, you of all people would not be my first choice for someone flummoxed by it all. Ten's of thousands of American HO guys armed only with chequebooks and Model Railroader magazines can't find this easier to understand than you, mate!

A similar thought occurred to me.......

Re: Hobo Jungle
Now that I think about it, the coupler draft gear box also limits truck rotation on the one 2-rail car I am playing with.
Intimate knowledge of two rail track wiring helped in expressing my sentiment about it. My first layout was HO with Atlas fiber tie track and turnouts. I was pleasantly surprised when, years later, I got back into toy trains and found with 3-rail a train could go around a return loop, activate the non-derailing switch itself and return from whence it came with no frantic toggle switch throwing on my part.

Wayne:
If I remember correctly, both the Riv and the Roco/Atlas Plymouths are grossly oversized (to fit the mechs), so a fair comparison.

Re: Hobo Jungle
Even in N-scale the Plymouths (Lima) tend to be oversized:
