I was a computer tech for a school district in the '80s and 90's and kids were forever stealing mouse balls and throwing them around the builidings. Some of them were heavy enough that they could do damage if they hit you. Anyway, everybody listed replacements in their parts lists but IBM was very delicate about it, officially calling them "mouse parts".

IBM has had sensitivity to this for some time. In the era of the Selectiic Typewriter, the term for type font elements evolved to typeballs. Some of the more daring clerical employees of customer installations began to refer to them as "their balls".

During word processor pre-history. I typed the draft of an important document in my academic career on a Selectic II with the Prestige Elite 96 occasionally swapped out the Symbol (it had integral signs, greek letters, and other math stuff) I had managed to sweet talk a cute little Italian American secretary in our department to keeping her office unlocked so I could use the machine at night. She used to stop in during the evenings to say hello and see how I was doing. I was so dumb that I greeted her back and kept working.

San and any other SoCal steam fans,
This is a cut and paste regarding an event for this sunday:
A high speed round trip along the scenic California Coast will take place on on Sunday, June 1, 2008. The Central Coast Railway Club and the Pacific Locomotive association are sponsoring a fun filled historic train trip behind the magnificent ex-Santa Fe 3751 steam locomotive.

The train will depart the Los Angeles Union Station at approximately 7:45 am (exact time will be on the tickets) with intermediate stops at Fullerton and Irvine and a planned 11:30 am arrival in downtown San Diego. The return trip will leave from the San Diego Sante Fe Station at approximately 2:30 pm with a planned 6:30 pm arrival back at the Los Angeles Union Station.

The Locomotive will be unhooked from the train and run backwards to the Miramar Y. Then back to the station to hook to the north side of the train to go back to LA .It is possible to get 4 good photo ops between Downtown and Miramar Y. Between Cardiff and Del mar The speed limit is 90 but the speed is restricted to 60.Some Diesel must be Jealous.

There's notice of the passing of Utah Phillips on the other side. My gawd, he's an icon. "Loafer's Glory: the Hobo Jungle of the Mind".

http://www.utahphillips.com/loafersglory.html

Does that describe us or what?

Although we were political opposites, I share his pacifism.

I suppose there's a master's thesis for somebody who wants to compare and contrast hobo/socialist/musician trends from Woody Guthrie to Utah. My he rest in peace and God bless his family.

San

PS: I'll be riding behind 3751 from L.A. to San Diego.
