TRAMP Hello, Tramp. Did you see my reply? Don't let your friend blow 5 grand on a new engine when he can get it fixed for less than a 10th of that amount. Just have him mail me $65.00 for the diagnostic fee.

The most likely cause is a blown out lower plenum gasket

Ah, see? I knew it!! 8)

(WTF is a 'plenum'??)

Mitch, I sent both your emails to Jake. He's the fellow standing with me in Gorham, NH by the caboose. If you're right, you'll definitely get something in the mail.

He says that when he starts the truck there's lots of gray smoke. He's not getting much blue smoke under acceleration. Does that fit?

Jon, not sure what to say on the SP engine. What was that box on top for?

The "box" or skyline casing was used as a smoke lifter. Which worked quite well. More common were the "elephant ear" smoke deflectors. More can be read here:

Tramp, you might get a little smoke on a cold startup, but it would be really rare to see blue oil smoke once the engine is warmed up and in closed loop. The catalytic converter lights off at about 575degrees and the modeled temperature is from 850degrees up to about 1,070. With those temps it consumes the oil and the cat turns it into water and dumps it. If you can follow my directions for the test, I am reasonably sure the lower gasket is gone. Intake manifolds are not built like they used to be. Used to be relatively flat across, or maybe with a little bit of high rise, but the intake on the magnum engines has a huge plenum chamber that almost touches the bottom of the lifter valley. On the bottom of the manifold there is a tin cover held on with aforementioned gasket and 21 1/4" bolts. When you get the intake off and turn it upside down, you'll see pieces of the gasket sticking out from under the pan probably in about 6-8 places. Once that's fixed with a new valley pan gasket and new intake gaskets, change the fouled plugs and take 'er out hammer it. It'll be fine. Oh yeah, ya gotta clean all the oil out of the plenum with brake cleaner. Engine vacuum pulled the oil in from the lifters past the blown gasket. That oil don't belong in there.

PS I was only kiddin' about the diag.

I like it. A little folk-rock country-pop sound. And whiskey.

I woke up this morning with the sundown, shinin' in.
I found my mind in the brown paper bag, it was in.
I tripped on a cloud and fell eight miles high,
I tore my mind on a jagged sky,
I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in.

Tune in, turn on, drop out.
