Hey you hobos, give my baby a thought tonight.
She's been nursing a cold for a week, but last night, some d*mn bug punched a hole through her sinus and got around her left eye, and overnight, it swelled up shut, and red as a Farmall. She was a 'direct' admission to my hospital, as our pediatrician thought it was sufficiently urgent to bypass the ER process, and tonight she's getting a CAT scan to see if there's a pocket of infection and if so, how close to her brain. At best, it's IV antibiotics. Worse, the OR to drain and wash, and worst, it develops into meningitis.
A good friend once said she had a heart as big as the Pennsy mainline, and that was no lie or exaggeration. Tough to see your kid laid low, when you would do anything in your power to take her place.
Parenting.
It ain't for no wimps.

Pete, I'm overwhelmed by the news. Having been in the hospital repeatedly as a child, I know exactly what she's going through. If there is anything I can do, let me know. Beyond that, please tell Leah I'm thinking of her. It might be helpful to promise her some special surprise when she gets out. I still remember my father promising me a case of Nesbitt's orange pop. I kept thinking about that and it helped take my mind of the other stuff.

I'm writing from the hospital. She was seen by Ophthalmology at 10:30 last night, then ENT @ midnight, and they did a nasal rinse. Despite antibiotics by IV at midnight and 8 today, her eye looks worse. At 11:30, shes going to get a PICC line under sedation, (super-duty intravenous line), and if she doesn't improve with the meds, she's still facing the OR to incise and rinse behind her eye. CAT scan showed no big pocket of infection, so that's good.
She's in good spirits, but then, she's a tough little nut.
