Although Daisy had been named Valedictorian and the outfit for her speech carefully chosen to prove that beauty and brains could indeed mix, she suddenly regretted her choice of attire, her rain-soaked T-shirt now valiantly engaging in the titanic struggle between the tensile strength of cotton and Newton's first law of motion.

More Capacitor Stuff

Postby webenda » Wed Jul 11, 2007 10:58 am

Andre,

Are you an electrical engineer? You give such good advice it seems that you are.

Jon,

Did you catch what Andre said about using 1.5 V lamps with a 5 V regulator? You need to wire four lamps in series (4x1.5=6V.)

If you wish to wire the lamps in parallel, then you should use an LM317T 1.2 Volt adjustable regulator rather than a 7805 5 Volt regulator.

Now for the capacitor question. Three 15 mA lamps in parallel draw 3x15=45 mA. Four draw 4x15=60 mA. R(3lamps)=V/I=1.5/0.045=33 ohm. R(4lamps)=1.5/0.060=25 ohm.

Three 1.5V, 15 mA lamps, 33 ohms
0.1uf: t=RC=33x0.1=3.3 us
1uf: t=RC=33x1=33 us
10uf: t=RC=33x10=330us
100uf: t=RC=33x100=3,300us=3.3 sec

Three 1.5V, 15 mA lamps, 25 ohms
0.1uf: t=RC=25x0.1=2.5 us
1uf: t=RC=25x1=25 us
10uf: t=RC=25x10=250us
100uf: t=RC=25x100=2,500us=2.5 sec

It looks like 10 uf is the minimum. As Andre said, 100 uf would be better, especially going through switches.

Did anyone catch a math error in my previous post?

One 6V, 25 mA lamp, 240 ohms
0.1uf: t=RC=240x0.1=24 us
1uf: t=RC=240x1=240 us
10uf: t=RC=240x10=2400us=2.4 sec
100uf: t=RC=240x100=24,000us=24 sec

I like math. One can see, just by looking at the math, that there is an advantage to using higher voltage lamps. That is--smaller filter caps may be used.

C'mon, Dirt. What'd the broad do to Will? What's it all about?

So now I know where that line "It was a dark and stormy night" comes from.

Keeriste, I thought it was from Mickey Spillane. Always liked the Mike Hammer novels.

"It was a miserable night, pouring rain, and the man was laying half on the sidewalk, half in the street, with a .45caliber bullet hole in the back of his head.

What an evening in Maine after a couple weeks of rain. I like the rain, but everyone needs a touch of summer to warm the bones.

Beers: 5 frosty cold Labatts.
