Hobo Jungle
Impressive artistic resume' D!
Some google fun...
Vehicle, engine, milage
Ford V-10, 415, 10.5 city, 10.5 highway.
Dodge Challenger, 392 Hemi, 14 city, 20 highway.
1959 El Camino, 350, 17 city, 21 highway.
Honda Civic hybrid, 26 city (EPA 47.)
Toyota Prius hybrid, 35 city (EPA 60.)
The hybrids are in their element in Los Angeles stop and go driving. (Remember LA traffic D?) When stopped on the freeway parking lot, the engine shuts off. When accelerating to the next stop, the batteries help. But, in other areas of the country, the distance between stops are so long that batteries run down and a hybrid runs off the gas engine only. Thus, owners are reporting much lower mileage than advertised.
Honda Hybrid E-Bay price: $12,000
Cost of driving 60,000 miles at $2.50/gal: $5,769
Initial cost plus gas for 60,000 miles: $17,769 ($12,000+$5,769)
El Camino E-Bay price: $3,500 (That rusty '59 was $1,950)
Bodywork, paint, brakes: $3,500
Cost of driving 60,000 miles at $2.50/gal: $8,824
Initial cost plus gas for 60,000 miles: $15,824 ($3,500+$3,500+$8,824)
Of course, since a car comes with the job, you need to follow the spirit of your contract. They may not be sympathetic about paying for a car that needs fixing up. My advice, play the politics (ala Al Gore) and get a hybrid.
Then save some of those big bucks you will be making to get what you want (yeeeow!)

Knuck is a pretty fancy dresser for a hobo, but if he has your okay, Hev, then he's in as far as I'm concerned.
Wayne, great stuff. I wonder what my 1966 Impala HT is worth these days. It still has the original paint, no rust, but the paint is very tired. Stock 327 which I believe gets around 18 MPG.
Jon, does the Virginian's chuff sound like "Papa sent me, papa sent me" to your ears?

That a life will be spent gaining inches,
When this distance is read in miles.
When this distance is read in miles.
To me it's more like: PA-sent-ME-home PA-sent-ME-home....

Tramp, What is the difference between a 1966 Impala HT and a 1966 Impala SS? There's a few '66 Impala SS's on Ebay right now.

Well, I ride on a mailtrain, babe
Can't buy a thrill
Well, I've been up all night
Leanin' on the window sill
Well, if I die
On top of the hill
And if I don't make it
You know my baby will.
Don't the moon look good, mama
Shinin' through the trees ?
Don't the brakeman look good, mama
Ragging down the "Double E" ?
Don't the sun look good
Goin' down over the sea ?
Don't my gal look fine
When she's comin' after me ?
Now the wintertime is coming
The windows are filled with frost
I went to tell everybody
But I could not get across
Well, I wanna be your lover, baby
I don't wanna be your boss
Don't say I never warned you
When your train gets lost.
My best to San, Tramp, Petey, Stiff and the rest of the old time hobos!
**********************************************************
I am a lonesome hobo
Without family or friends
Where another man's life might begin
That's exactly where mine ends
I have tried my hand at bribery
Blackmail and deceit
And I've served time for ev'rything
'Cept begging on the street.
Well, once I was rather prosperous
There was nothing I did lack
I had fourteen-karat gold in my mouth
And silk upon my back
But I did not trust my brother
I carried him to blame
Which led me to my fatal doom
To wander off in shame.
Your pal,
Dufus

Like Tramp said the SS is a trim option on the Impala. Engines, trans. rears, ect were all add on options. You could order a 427 4 speed in a stationwagon. The impala two door had two roof options. Hard top sport roof ( I think thats what they called it) like a fast back. The windows in the doors and the quarters had no frames. only the vent windows had a frame. The hard top had full frames on the doors for the windows I think and the rear roof line was shorter than other. I'll try to find pics.

Dufus! Damn, bro, yer a sight for sore eyes!
That there's a mighty fine piece of poetry. A keeper!
Sit down and warm yerself up by this here fire, and lemme pour us a shot of Gold(tm) I've had tucked away. How you been, you old hobo?
I know you always had a restless heart. Jus' remember you always got a free meal in Orangeville whenever you get hungry.
Ya know, I've come to the conclusion there are certain forums were the real train nerds reside. Scary dark places were battle lines are drawn over things like Worthington SA feedwater heaters or Elesco exhaust steam injectors. Places viod of any humor or lust for women and beer. I pledge never to return to that abyss! Yikes!!!!
WheW, I need a beer!!!!!
