0900 in north central Pennsylvania, January 6th, and the current temp is 57 degrees, and all the windows are open. It's a hobo's winter so far! Closed my eyes last night to the sweep of mild wind and patter of rain, and slept like the proverbial log, the untroubled sleep of the Pope.
The weather-dude says we have a shot at hitting 70 today.

Me, Red, and the kids gotta work our way to the other side of the river to the PRR mainline. There, we're going to catch a fast freight south to Lancaster County, get together with a hobo I know down there.
I'll tell him you lunks said "Hey".

Penn, we're not allowed to post while under the influence, so I gave up drinking for New Years.

Union Pacific Rail Yard at Picacho Peak Arizona

Postby webenda » Sun Jan 07, 2007 5:27 am

Hev,

It is just the usual insanity around here.

Trains travel through the desert at 70 to 80 mph yet Union Pacific's (U.P.) system velocity on the Sunset Route is only 22.2 mph. To speed things up, U.P. is double tracking the Sunset Route (Colton Yard to El Paso.) That will place an impossible burden on the Tucson Yard. Most days U.P. has trains sitting out on the main line for miles, waiting to get into Tucson Train Yard. U.P. has been looking for a place to build a larger yard to alleviate the problem.

By lucky coincidence (or did someone ask if they could buy it?) the State of Arizona has decided to put a large area of flat land (perfect for a rail yard) up for auction. Jamie Hogue, deputy state land commissioner, said the land department is determined to sell the property because it is mandated by state law to determine the "highest and best use" of the land.

When U.P. requested approval from Pinal county (were the land is located) to build a rail yard, the locals found out about it. They go the the county and state planning meetings and make up all sorts of inventive doom and gloom stories about how a rail yard would ruin the environment. Those for the yard sit on one side, those against on the other. They usually get into arguments across the room at each other. There is one person at the meeting who's job it is to ask the arguers to address the board, not each other. (Good thing no guns are allowed at these meetings.)

If the TV News shows up, those against use the opportunity to voice their concerns again to the press.

Most vocal is D.C. "Rooster" Cogburn who operates an Ostrich Ranch across the highway from the property. He put up the sign. Cogburn says the noise from the yard will disturb the quiet solitude of the area and scare his ostrichs.

Cogburn's daughter Dana Barrett is worried that the rail yard will disturb bats that live in caves miles from the site. She says UP was told about the bats in a hearing. "We can't seem to get anyone interested in protecting these bats," she says.

Herb Kai leases the land in question to grow cotton, grains, and pecans. He says "We're storing water under ground for future generations. People are concerned that any pollution will contaminate it. The railroad would have to prove 100 percent that Picacho Peak is the only place this could go."

And on and on it goes...

Wayne; and so it goes,,,,,,UP has to prove that this won't disrupt anything in the area,,,,,but they can't prove that it will either but all they have to do is raise suspition.
If it goes the way it has in Indiana? the Big banks and the railroad will win anyway!
regardless of weather or not anything is proved or disproved.
