Don't know what road name. I'd be guessing a mixed freight, with cement cars, hoppers with ore, some tankers, and at least one open-doored boxcar with some raggedy hobos joying the steel-wheel music, grain elevators flying by, and that low sun, clean air, and wide-open sky.

Then once we hop off the freight, we trudge up the hill and get us a cold drink up here-

First round's on P&R Pete.

We saw the new Bond movie last night. The new guy playing Bond looks a lot like Jon. In some scenes I kept thinking Bond was Jon.

My middle son Airborne (Aaron) ran into our kitchen, SILENTLY, and frantically grabbed the Redhead by the arm. He had swallowed too big a chunk of orange, and he was choking.
He was silent because he was totally occluded, and could neither draw a breath nor utter a word.

Take a minute sometime, friends, that's all it takes, and learn how to do the Heimlich Maneuver. We're both nurses, so maybe we see the chance more often, but Kim has saved 6 people's lives, once in a restaurant, three times in our hospital, once each on two of our kids. Me, I've done it once, on a man who was already cyanotic and was on the verge of collapse. With all seven, it worked like a God-send, including Aaron, as the chunk of orange popped out on her first pull.
That's a 100% success rate. Think about it.

What a completely unnecessary way to go. It happens in an instant, and unconciousness can come in much less than a minute.
About the same amount of time it takes to learn the procedure.
So do yourself and your family a favor.

And at my home tonight, a hobo prayer for the safety of my three kids, if and when it happens again, and we're not around.

Here in the Jungle, we rely on hard science.

James Bond, the well known fictional secret agent ("007") of the British intelligence services, not only is astute in matters of clandestine affairs at a personal and international level but may also possess insights of interest to medical science. Take for example his insistence on having his martini "shaken, not stirred." Does this straightforward direction to the barman merely yield a crisper drink, more to James Bond's taste, or is there more to it?

From the British Medical Journal, "Shaken, not stirred: bioanalytical study of the antioxidant activities of martinis", BMJ 1999;319:1600-1602 ( 18 December )

http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/319/7225/1600

Results?

The martinis, when undiluted, are capable of suppressing counts from 42 mmol/l peroxide by over 99.9%. We calculate that after ingestion an absorbed martini may be able to react with 210 µmol/l of hydrogen peroxide. We have previously determined that 5 mmol/l ethanol, a blood concentration of ethanol found after absorption of one or two typical alcoholic drinks, would eliminate 131 µmol/l peroxide.6 The peroxide concentrations detected in the aqueous humour have ranged from 14 µmol/l to 31 µmol/l: mean 24 (SE 7) µmol/l for normal humans, with higher concentrations in cataract patients (82 (155) µmol/l and 198 ( 88 ) µmol/l13). Both vitamin E and ethanol decrease the risk of cataract 4 5 and atherosclerosis 1 3 by about half. The residual peroxide concentrations in the aqueous humour possibly reflect those in the serum, from which the aqueous humour is formed by ultrafiltration at the ciliary body. After the consumption of shaken martinis, peroxide concentrations of serum and aqueous humour could be half those found after ingestion of stirred martinis.

The authors have not examined any antioxidant contributions from olives.

On a lighter note, Aaron, the birthday boy, at his party at a local skating rink-

That's the Redhead behind my daughter, Airborne with the spiked-hair over his forehead to her right, Evan to her left. They're all sitting there with their skates on!

LOL, the hosting-rink folks are very friendly and ingratiating, and orchestrate the pizza, soda, and cake very nicely, but it's a two hour party, and the room is booked all afternoon, so one mustn't tarry as the hour draws near, or you get the bum's-rush the hell out of the way!

Petey,

Beyond the "science" of martinis, yours is a most pragmatic suggestion. Most workplaces, YMCAs, and Red Cross Chapters provide CPR training that includes the Heimlich Maneuver. Hobo's owe it to themselves to learn this.

A quick read but essential knowledge:

http://www.heimlichinstitute.org/howtodo.html

There was a special angel watching over Aaron tonight. That he was born into a family with you and the Redhead as parents is a blessing. His life continues.

Your 100% success rate is, well, sobering. I believe it. Even military training on first aid is noteworthy. Read this:

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/army/fm/21-75/Ch8.htm

You must be shaken after such an event. It makes one think.

First aid training is a godsend, well worth the time and effort.
Several years ago, my lovely bride was taking my Dad to a Dr's appointment.
Afterwords they went for breakfast.
When they were leaving, Dad was putting on his seatbelt, when he slumped in his seat.
The Blonde ran around the Jeep, drug him out, and started CPR, while the daughter went for help.
Seven minutes was the response time for the local ambulance service.
He lived, for her fast actions.
Learn First Aid.
The life you save is someone's loved one!

Glad to hear Airborne is alright...................... :) That kind of thing does give ya a rush. I have to be trained on that stuff being in the Fire Dept. I have to renew my stuff again in Feb 2007. The Susquehanna Valley EMS does the course.

Tell Airborne Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hells Bells, I post a question in NK looking for some ideas where to find some period appropriate seated passengers for a set of MTH Overton cars. So far no new merchants but it is now a debate as to the validity of the term "Overton" and what was an "appropriate period loco" for an Overton coach.
PS. I'm ready for a drink !!!!!!!!!
