I obviously don't know what I'm talking about because I posted that the panels were glued to a brass shell and everybody knows that 3rd rail diesels are plastic.

The detached panels are probably actual stainless steel - I know you can get foil-like thicknesses of it, so the detached panels in the pictures could be actual stainless steel. It wouldn't have made sense for 3rd Rail to use Alclad's stainless steel effect paint because the resulting paint jobs would not hold up to typical three-railer use (rough handling and smoke fluid residue landing on the model.)

Just seeing this now. Yes, I agree with this assessment. An interesting failure mode, of which the only similar once I've personally witnessed is on MTH models where their diesel treadplate decking peels off the chassis.

I do think one of my earlier sunset diesels has stainless vent grilles that have curved away from the model rather harshly, but IIRC they fixed this issue in later models.

I don't think it is the same model B-unit that was sold by Stout because I see a difference in the glue application - on the TrainZ model there is a spot for a panel, right next to a side window, that didn't have glue applied to it. There was glue applied in that same spot on the Stout model.

Good ole Trainz trying to milk every item for top dollar. I would maybe pay 1/3 MSRP max and gamble on there being all the parts in the bag and that I could permanently fix it. I gotta imagine temperature and humidity are large factors in the adherence of those panels.

There were O-scale items in Stout's June 18, 2026 auction:
2 and 3 Rail Train Auction of N scale to G scale! Includes Brass, Atlas, MTH, Sunset Models, 3rd Rail, Overland Models, Lionel, Live Steam & More.

Even after Stout's commission and shipping fees, the prices realized seemed (to me!) to be down, especially on (1) plastic diesels, (3) Weaver brass steam and (3) All Nation F-units. I was tempted to bid on this set of All-Nation units in Seaboard paint:
All Nation O Scale 2 Rail Die Cast Seaboard F-2 AB Diesel Locomotive Engines.
but then I noticed that the units had center rail pickups - phew!

I also noticed that several of the lots appeared to be repeats of lots that were previously sold, like this one:
Seven Assorted O Scale 2 Rail Steam & Diesel Locomotives.
At first glace, that lot appears to be junker shells, but if you look closer, there appear to be three sets of P&D Brass Blomberg side frames and three P&D brass frames under those geep shells....and those parts have gotten really, really, really expensive when they show up on ebay.

I think I was most surprised by the Precision Scale DD40AXs that sold for under a grand each, specifically:

I was also surprised by the KTM US Hobbies Brass 2 Rail O Scale EMD F-45 Diesel Engine OB and KTM US Hobbies Brass 2 Rail O Scale SD-45 Diesel Engine Kit that sold for $625 each. They're nice models with rugged drive trains, but their fans and other detail parts aren't great... but then again they're much more practical units for most pikes than the DD40AXs.
