Opinion

Thanks, Butch.

It doesn’t change the fact I was doing all this o scale community participation on OGR for a decade and suddenly I was an influencer, and I have been that especially in rail photography here in Colorado; but not without creating a headwind for myself. I influenced what I started in 2010, “studio shots” posts on OGR, my effort to educate the online community about 1/4 scale finer models, o isn’t just 3 rail and lobster claws, before 2009 it was rare to find the finer stuff online. I am frankly honored and humbled,

Looking at the models in question here, one given fanfare the other not, one a value minded entry in the market made of plastic and hand made rare 1 or 5 of a kind and albiet expensive, well, it can be seen as a society thing, and not worth a publisher's time to print. We all know a lot if not most brass guys are snobs and plastic buyers are budget minded. Is it that simple? Probably.

. In the end it’s on me.

If it was done by Joe, that precedes my involvement in any decision making at OST. What got in after I became Ed. was on me working with what I have in hand. For reasons that confound me to this day, people still think I had a staff working on content writing away, etc. My staff consisted of 3 individuals: Me, Myself, I; two of who were dubious at best and third being a completely dodgy geezer.

Santiago's stuff got in because he sent it in; it's just that simple. He understood how to take a workable cover photo. I invited numerous modelers to send photos/articles, even those that wanted to know if I would be interested in "whatever" or just complained about the lack of the same. I invited one such person 3 times his having agreed twice without delivering anything at all. I worked on this as Ed. for 6+ w/o much at all delivered to me from a large pool of so-called authors and experts failing to deliver anything at all. I did get a lot of articles from modelers that cared and tried their best. I might have turned away 2 articles and 1 advertisement all of which I directed to OGR as all 3 were far better suited there.

Funny - I was just about to type something like that. I have never been involved in actual publishing under deadlines, with choices as to content, etc., but I can guess at the constraints and stress.

This is an incredibly small community - any kind of publication would depend on submissions, and when nobody else submits anything the editors just publish what they have. Some editors are biased (Myron Biggar was biased toward 3-rail, and that's where he took OSR-OGR).

In my opinion Joe was slightly biased toward layouts. I admit to being biased toward locomotives, rolling stock, and scratchbuilding - if I ran a magazine and could get more than enough input you know what I would select.

But there was never more than enough input. Once in a while a submission would be rejected - often enough because it got lost in the bottom of a pile. I think I had about a 75% success rate - some of my stuff was not good, but I bet a lot of it was on the bottom of said pile.

Criticism is what makes us better - ad hominem attacks are never helpful.

No way would I personally ever attempt to publish a magazine, so all of those folks - even OGR - have my admiration. I am happy not being a businessman or entrepreneur, but I can still respect what those folks try to do.

Your statement may just gain a life of its own.....it's great! I will be using it going forward.

I never knew you were the "show" after Whiteriver bought the magazine. Wow!

The layout and all were done by WRP; only for a brief period of time was that not a total PITA. I merely herded the cats/squirrels as best as possible.

I now have a completely empty file cabinet drawer and a 4T external drive that's "resting" over in desk #1. With my other Editor job closed out I've been able to recover all that plus a goodly amount of space on desk #3.

In the meantime, I'm just selling off a handful of models every week....and I have to go into my shop and set up the photo space for next week's offerings.

Oh, I think I know how to make a cover, and an article, as I stated I didn’t want to share my work with OST, and no, I didn’t send you a thing, it went to your competitors and they published my content.

I was not implying that you did not, only that very few apparently do. That few even take portrait orientation photos at all was striking.

Your decisions are just that; I left the door open. We never considered other publications to be competition. Apparently the converse was not true.

The more 2 rail O scale in print, the better. We have a very limited arena of choices remaining now.

I owe Dan/OSR another article.........

I always thought this was a good reference for Red Nose era detailing, it still has the hinged doors on the pilot added in 1942 and all the other goodies added in. By this time over abuse and loss of stainless the pilot is now painted silver. Eventually many roads put a standard F unit E unit pilot on these things which obviously ruins the rakish swept back appearance.

Black nose 1942ish… CB&Q detailing, Butch your friend is modifying a model that I wish we could have had done, without reservations none were built. I would have undoubtedly bought one for myself if they had.

These body mount cut levers froze up, you name it, they were removed by everyone. I think CB&Q did it by 55, or so.

A lot of effort went into making these right with all the best talent in Korea between 2009 and 2012, including Mr Oh, master tool maker for OCS he has since passed away, unfortunately. 3D Lidar lithography was used in the development of the windshield sculpt and nose profiling like Rapido does now many projects, truly innovative. Key was a great organizer of some extraordinary talent.

It sure was fun, a great experience.

PS: don’t pay attention to the class light lenses missing they forgot to put in. Haha  .. I’ve since added them , a guy just can’t win with these projects.

GREAT images and outstanding information Erik. Wow! I'll put them in a folder on my computer and that way when I forget this info in a few years, it's available so I can relearn. :D I remember these images from years ago, but not sure where I saw them and didn't keep copies.

I actually sent my friend the link to this thread (he doesn't do forums) and he was able to open it (didn't know that would work) yesterday and he saw your photos and information. He contacted Bill Davis, but Bill only had OMI E-8/9 loco numerals. But my friends son can use Bills decals to make some correct E5's for him. He is elated.

You latest photos and information will put him over the top. If he's only able to see what was posted as of yesterday (I don't know if the link will show posts after that moment in time), I'll send another link showing your latest postings. He will be in 7th Heaven!
