DC-only is a can motor without any electronics to rectify AC. The engine weights 14.5 ounces. I paid $9.00 for it.
Most of these 8300 series have plastic shells but the 8310 has a ZAMAC (or maybe pot metal) shell, a universal motor, and a 2-way reverse unit.

Also these have the T40 transformer which I think is the 4 amp. I am on the lookout for the big transformers as well lol. I think I should be able to run single locs on this as is although the rheostats may not live long!

Yeah, my C 25 has a 50-ohm rheostat. But, that is a good thing because I plan to rewire it as a potentiometer and use it to control voltage instead of current.

Yes, T40 would have a 4 amp rating.

I would think the transformer in my C-25 would be a T25 but it might not be. The 1960 Marnold Catalog indicates a T-3B for a C-25. The B indicates it is center tapped.

Agreed, Def on the lookout for larger transformers lol. I probably have some real beefy ones leftover from some gutted console stereos but would need to go compare specs

That's about what I paid for the tenderless 8310. Thanks for the info...I haven't cracked it open yet, but it would be fun to try to get it back to looking like an 0-4-0 switcher. I have an MPC-era slope-back tender, so not a stretch to reconfigure. The extended coupler-less pilot is the butchered up bit.

I'll get to it eventually.

I built this years ago for our club. I used a an Acme commercial transformer and a variac for voltage control. This will provide 25 amps at 20 volts but I used a pair of TMCC lock ons which limits max current to ten amps. Acme makes many sizes of their transformers, these were salvaged from a dumpster.

This just for reference. Ignore the price, they can be found at a quarter of that plus Acme makes smaller ones.

Thank you for the hint, Pete. That is a nice looking power supply.

Something interesting is going on at both ends of the Marn-O-Stat.
Image

Green Copper Carbonate (CuCO3·Cu(OH)2).

This material forms on copper just from water. In this case, the C-23-B came from St Petersburg, Florida. The day I purchased it the humidity in St. Petersburg was 90%. Water starts collecting on things when air humidity exceeds 50%.

This kind of corrosion is accelerated by electric current between dissimilar metals. It is called Galvanic Corrosion.

Dissimilar metals in the C-25-B at the point of corrosion:
Copper--Tin/Lead alloy (solder)
Copper--Nickel Chrome Alloy (Nichrome wire)

Okay, in between clean-up stints in the basement, I took occasional breaks to make a paper version of Marx's West Side Warehouse:

Image

Butchered up the base a bit, but it seems serviceable. Made the original's plastic bits using scraps of paper, cardboard, and basswood found around the workbench. I'll likely use this halfway back on the layout, a place where the defects aren't quite so obvious.

I used the shots Ed Berg posted on his blog https://toyconnect.blogspot.com/2011/10/marx-westside-warehouse.html edited a bit using MS Paint. Not too complicated.

Back to the basement...

Great pic, Hondo; looks like it's in really nice shape (unlike most I've ever seen). I think it was originally in Marx's The Untouchables playset...would be neat to know what else was in there. Thanks for posting that pic.

The other building in the play set is just a street scene tinplate front not a full building like the warehouse.
