Downloading from the email onto your computer and then hosting it somewhere to get an actual address will work.

It seemed to work and is much easier, but maybe not in the big picture. Did I expose either the senders or my email address?

OK, I didn't know that. I get it. I can cut and paste image address from other forums, but not all the time from emails sent to me. Thank You!

Yes. Seems to depend on where the photo was hosted in the email as well as what email system. Too many variables; better to host it yourself and then you know you have control. But, even hosting some myself I have found 3-4 that simply would not work here. Something in the metadata was blocking their use here - if I "fiddle about" with the file parameters and re-save in another format or 2, I usually can work around that block.
