Being responsible and doing the responsible thing seems impossible in this country now. Use to be possible long ago...but just look at vaccination and being responsible. Nope, not going to happen in this country - land of irresponsibility and hated for one another.......

Neil wrote:A sensible gun law would not require the canceling of the second amendment. Simply make gun ownership illegal for all, except for members of recognized state or local militias, which was the intent of the original second amendment. This would keep guns out of the hands of individuals who are not screened (as are all military personnel) for mental illness, intellectual competence. If only adult, responsible, trained, sane individuals committed to public service (in a militia) were allowed to possess firearms, as intended by the second amendment, many of the recent monsters who easily purchased weapons would not have had access to them. The perpetrators of the Sandy Hook and yesterday's Uvalde horrors would not have had access to weapons, nor would the insane young man who perpetrated the Buffalo massacre. Almost none of these atrocities are committed by veterans or law enforcement personnel. Restricting ownership of handguns and long guns to those who have been screened and found fit for public service, as in a militia or law enforcement, would dramatically alter our society for the better without preventing responsible citizens from owning weapons for self defense or maintaining public order.

Just out of curiosity. How would you remove all the guns out there now? This cat is so far out of the bag. He’s crossing the street with a chicken.

Grace period of one year for those who no longer qualify under the requirements for either (1) qualification through membership in community militia or law enforcement/veteran status along with regular education and mental status evaluation or (2) participation in gun licensure for hunting via regular mental status and training requirements. A government buy back program that generously funds people who donate weapons no longer qualifying. After one year, it's a felony with heavy fines and prison sentences for possession of something more dangerous than marijuana or cocaine.

How would you remove the guns from street thugs? Philly had 186 or more gun deaths. This year. Along with 800 shot and wounded.
It will be hard to fight the gun lobby. Stop and frisk only angers equal rights groups. Sadly it would be easier to lock school doors. First line of defense would be to keep people out.

They did stop and frisk to remove guns from the streets in New York But it was deemed Racist so they stopped doing it.

And while I would like to say lock the doors would do it it won't.... Sandy Hook.... Adam Lanza shot his way through a window next to the school's locked security door. That is a kid that should have been in a mental institution along with his mother. She was the one that bought the guns and took him to the gun range to teach him how to use them.

When committing a crime using a gun carries a life sentence, eventually there will not be many bad guys carrying guns. It will take time, but it can happen.

And the use of armed guards or teachers is a non-starter. There were armed guards at the Buffalo Tops and the Texas school. It didn't make any difference. We need to prevent people who are demented, enraged or evil from owning guns. The only way to do this is to screen all potential gun owners very carefully and only allow guns to those who have a need for them professionally or recreationally and who pass screening and rescreening every, say, five years. The only difference between the USA and Canada is not the incidence of crazy or enraged people, it's the availability of weapons of mass murder.

Can you positively say “ top’s guard was armed”? Not sure it would have made much of a difference. Most security guards are not armed. Companies don’t want the liability.

If president Biden can send weapons and 45 billion dollars to the Ukraine he can spend 45 billion dollars in this country protecting the school children.....

Or maybe he could use the our military to help protect the schools instead of sending them to African to shoot Muslim children that are carrying ak47s :(

100% Democrat California is using this to pass more gun laws to make themselves feel good but not do a damn thing as far as stopping school shootings. Govenor Newsom wants to outlaw ghost guns and something else I forgot what. That will do nothing, criminals don't care about their laws. And he says California leads the way for other states to follow.

There was a guy that took all the guns a while back. His name was Hitler.

PS: How many criminals/gang members/nut cases are going to voluntarily turn in their guns?

Then there is the number of people killed by automobiles....we would all be walking using your thought processes.

"There was a guy that took all the guns a while back. His name was Hitler."

Totally irrelevant. In response to mass murders, the United Kingdom, Australia and Norway made it extremely difficult to obtain weapons unless you met stringent requirements. They have not seen democracy disappear, but murders with firearms have been vanishingly rare. The same is true of Canada, and weapons leak across the border. There are just as many evil or crazy people in these countries, they just don't have access to weapons of mass murder, which have no social utility whatever.

"PS: How many criminals/gang members/nut cases are going to voluntarily turn in their guns?"

That's what police are for. And laws that make life imprisonment a consequence of illegally possessing a weapon that is not permitted by law, or committing a crime using a weapon.

"Then there is the number of people killed by automobiles....we would all be walking using your thought processes."

Totally irrelevant. While reducing this number is an important goal, automobiles, unlike firearms not used for the common defense or hunting by carefully screened owners, have a social purpose of importance. There is no social utility in allowing mentally deranged people or people with a history of violent behavior to purchase weapons without screening as is possible in most states. This is pure and simple a problem of stupidity, stubborn adherence to political dogma and right wing radical sociopathy. No one is advocating taking away weapons from hunters and members of state militia. No one is advocating removing automatic weapons from the US Army, just from the political radicals who think they need such weapons of mass destruction in their homes.

Silly argument and as stated irrelevant. Some trains of thought have not even imaginary track to run on...

However we do test and license and register drivers.......and set standards to be met.

All of them? Talk about silly. That’s like saying every person behind the wheel is a legally licensed and tested driver. I’m willing to bet there are plenty of drivers out there with illegal licenses. I saw a truck load of Hispanics get rear ended at a traffic light and they all got out and ran. It wasn’t even there fault. I’m sure everything was legit there.
