Well, Hondo, Amazon is screwing you because its the exact same thing Wayne bought at Lowes for $5.75. People are getting complacent about Amazon because they get it delivered quickly without going out of the house. You have to be careful and shop around; Amazon is rarely the best price and often obscene. They are also very often "not forthcoming" (to be nice) in their descriptions. They've turned into an even bigger purveyor of excrement than Walmart and are experts at careful exclusionary description at higher prices.

The item number is the same, and a detailed read of the prose says its an "HSS bit and tap", not HSS bit and HSS tap. Read in a bit and its a carbon steel tap. Identical product.

So, I don't see why I'd want high-speed-steel in a hand-tap anyway. Its not a high tool-speed application, not like a drill bit. A properly made ground carbon steel tap is often nicer in form for the money and less likely to snick off than an un-necessarily harder material tap in gummy metal applications like zamac.

I have never bought anything from Amazon and never will. I was just responding to Wayne. He usually does an excellent job of presenting something of this nature. I thought he had done his homework on the subject.

As for me I have a big supply of American made HSS taps and dies that I have had for years. I do a lot of work with stainless steel so they have to be good and I always use the appropriate tapping fluid for whatever I am working on that I get from Grizzly tools close to where I live.

I do have a couple of taps and dies that were made in Asia. 1/2 inch X 28. Specialty item I bought from a gunsmiths supply house for making muzzle brakes and compensators out of stainless steel. As long as I use SS taping fluid they have lasted a long time.

You wanna see bad, look at a PRC files and compare to an old US made file. I'm surprised the PRC's will cut at all. BTW, given to me....wouldn't buy them.

I have a horrible stack of Brazilian made hacksaw blades. One forward swipe and they are shot. Only way they would go through butter would be to hammer them through. Really bad blades. after trying 3. i throw out the remaining 21.

Always has been true; not just in regards to Amazon but I've run into ridiculous pricing with just about everywhere one time or another. Was looking for steel for staking up the bent over from snow broom plants........$34 ea,

Most recently it was larger paper cups.....order of magnitude increase to stupid money......but patience and little looking about; yup, normal pricing.

Again,I'm glad I very rarely need to purchase tools other than the small drill bits - most of those are okay for what I do, but I know they are not high quality either....adequate is just that. Did pick up a nice set of new shave hooks with a pair of small wood planes; all new for less than the price of 1 plane. I only wanted the shave hooks.........

Are the Irwin Hanson taps HSS (high speed steel) or are they carbon steel ?

HSS should be a lot more expensive.
