"It bewilders me to see you spending so much time on a model train forum when you could be caring for needy."

Of course it bewilders you. It has never occurred to you that you DON'T KNOW what I'm doing to care for the needy. You've never had a thought in your head outside of the BS spouted by ignorant lunatics on the web. Lies 'R Us :).

It's not rocket science to provide a safety net so no one lives in the street, goes hungry or does without basic health care. It's not all that expensive either.

Being a doctor of your stature, you must have plenty of disposable income to start such a charity or organization to help the less fortunate. Combined with your white privilege that has allowed you to advance in life and have possessions such as model trains. It bewilders me to see you spending so much time on a model train forum when you could be caring for needy.

Some seriously bizarre reasoning involved above. When we write of a safety net that does refer to society at large including yourself being that net along with the Gov't at all levels. I do my part when I can and more now than ever to help others climb up to where I've had the good fortune to get to through a lifetime of hard work.

Privilege; no, generations of family working to advance; that old concept of the American Dream of hard work and being rewarded for it. Sadly, you seem that being successful is something else that only privileged people are able to attain. Nothing given; all earned. 4 generations back most of the family were subsistence family farmers still; there was thing called the Depression in which one side of the family lost the farm and everyone had to work to stay alive. From there and 3 generations later I was able to go to college. Other side of the family still has the family farm, but are not full-time farmers.

As for bewilderment, maybe I have more than adequate skills to hold down 2 jobs post-retirement, run a consulting business simultaneous, and sit on the Board of a non-profit. You should consider not wasting so much time here.

The word "private," like the word personal, would be the operative concept there .

Thank you, Murph.

By the way I don't spend much actual time here. I type about 60-100 words per minute thanks to a junior high school typing course and piano lessons :). Takes me a minute or less to type a couple of paragraphs, whereas I suspect some here are using one finger of each hand hunting and pecking, and would take a few hours to transcribe the Gettysburg Address. No crime not to keyboard rapidly, but don't make assumptions about others, as Greg likes to do.

I used to be that fast at the keyboard and maybe still am.....not like I time myself, But, I still do write articles for publication and stay in practice,

Piano.......also did that for a while.....but stopped a long time ago.

Yeah, I haven't played piano much in recent centuries :). But the keyboard skills were pretty useful in learning to type properly back when I was 14 or so.

Yes; great for coordination and independence. Keyboard - junior high required typing curse that I and everyone else struggled through - seemed that the teacher fully expected 160 word/min perfection from all immediately.

Not even close, I had to work very hard and still do to get to where I am. Amazingly the brightest of the bunch misconstrue my comments. Neil touts the Democratic Party socialist bullshit giving this and that and the third away. It’s fine if you if you personally want to help others, but the Dems create dependency in doing so, hence my comments. I’m happy to help out of my own free will, but the govt and mainly the Democrats insist on program after program that does nothing to lift people up. In fact it does quite the opposite by enabling them to stay where they are. I’m totally for helping people, but at some point if they are not willing to help themselves and become wards of the state than what’s the point of continuing to give them everything?

For the record, I’m willing to give you a pass because I think your a bit more free thinking and open minded. At some point you discovered which end of the axe splits the wood where Neil is still struggling to figure it out. You don’t know me or anything about me. Neil hears Trump supporter or conservative Republican and you instantly get placed into the box of racist, misogynist, bigot, homophobe. The American people myself included get tired of hearing it and it’s largely bullshit. Neil insists on fanning the flames of division which does nothing to unify people.

Yes, it's all my fault. Trump is innocent :). You are insane.

And the majority of Republican members of the House trying to subvert the results of an election to enable a dictator to stay in power, that's not divisive? And you don't have knee jerk reaction to anyone who suggests that certain progressive social programs might actually be in the national interest? You are so blind to your own prejudices it is quite pathetic and morally bankrupt on your part.

There's not a shred of economic research that supports your point of view about government programs creating a permanent underclass. Total Republican fantasy, like tax cuts benefiting the rich cause general social benefits. Only crackpot economists believe that rubbish. Indeed, there is extensive evidence that money spent on children in poverty makes a huge difference in their life outcomes and contributions to society. If we waited for individuals, private charities and individuals to do this work, we'd be depriving the children of our nation of the opportunities they deserve.

Paranoid much? I don't attack people personally because of their opinions. I attack people like you who attack people based upon their opinions. Actions count. If you express support for Trump, my reaction is poor misguided individual. If you express support for conservative opinions, my reaction is what are the issues? If you express racist, misogynist, bigoted, homophobic opinions, then you are those things. Trump certainly is most of those things, or supports those things in others, but many of his supporters are not, granted. Congratulations if you can stomach Trump and aren't a racist, misogynist bigot. Cannot imagine how anyone could stomach the miserable dog and not see his support for many bad, bad things.
