New. Looks it. I remember these...MR Magazine, multi-page ads from IHC.....brand new $6.98 and they were horrible POS engines when new. Short (relative) wheelbase, poor pickup over switches....and the motors....this guy in Arkansas wants $37 plus shipping. But wait!

Shows $12.55 shipping to my location. Having shipped 11 lots of sales this past week, $12.55 would be about average.

Most likely. Have to wait for the supply ship after the ice breaks up in spring. Air Freight is way too much.

But just the cost..knowing what they cost...and what they are..and how long they last.

Used to see them all the time at train shows, wheels falling off, shell screw mounts stripped and broken, motors burned up, gears gone.

About like the F-9's but on a smaller scale.
If I remember, folks would buy these for parts to fix those.

Is that true for these too? I know it's true for AHM's MDT, having the same HO style motor and gear as their glass jaw C-liner drives, I've bought at least four for mega cheap solely to relieve them of their motor and gear. Their car body so wierd too, appearing somewhat north of 1:32 scale. These Atlas appear to be oversized too, or is that just an illusion? I've never had to bother with them, swimming in F9 junkers as I have been for decades now.

Seem to recall you've used one of these for one of your traction projects in OST, true? or am I thinking of that IMP JNR motor project? I had a fellow club member in Dallas who used a pair of the chassis to kit-bash a rather charming "Tom York-ish" looking BA&P style box cab set. Very cool looking but ill fated, with one of the car body roofs melting down onto the motor and chassis due to overheating during a show. Sad but never-the-less entertaining though the show management was not amused by either the smoke or the smell. Ah, the golden age of Cheap-O.

That was one of the issues, on all that early Atlas sh..stuff. Motors often overheated before they went POOF! Didn't do much damage to a large F9 shell but tight WDTs?

Agreed, especially since Weaver has folded, though a lot of their final Korean and PRC stuff was not terribly low-end either. I'd settle for an InterMountain style kit for the carbody/chassis and a separate basic P&D style drive (updated with Jay's belt design instead of those infernal chains) set-up, like-in-concept but higher quality with the 70's era AHM IHB 0-8-0 kit and its optional powering package, perhaps both a steam engine and a diesel. I'll avoid the argument about which prototypes and era though since no one EVER agrees on that do they? And then again, how many folks have the chops to even decently assemble a styrene model these days (I'm still working on that myself )
