Editorial from the National Lampoon April 1973 Issue. Theme is "Prejudice". Cover is a parody of a Psychology Today magazine cover, a tenement stoop with a manakin dressed as a businessman holding an iron ring (a parody in itself of a lawn jockey yard ornament).

You have forefathers who go to the edge of their country and put up a stone billboard that says "Give me your tired, your poor . . . huddled masses . . . wretched refuse . . . tempest-tossed . . . homeless . . .", and you're not exactly going to wind up with the membership of the Piping Rock Country Club. Those were blatant insults, and upon seeing them anybody with an ounce of dignity would have palled, come about, flushed their holding tanks, and head- ed back to from whence they came. Most self-respecting people did. So what we wound up with were the very Huddled Masses, the most Wretched Refuse, the totally Tempest-tossed, and the homeless Homeless, all of whom were illiterate and did not understand one word of our snotty sign. For all they knew, it could have read, "If you are close enough to read this, your ship has run aground. Ha ha— the Founding Fathers." And probably should have.

......

But did they remain to notice that a Homeless totally lacks the herding instincts of the Huddled Masses, and that when the Huddled Masses move off in unison the Homeless will remain behind and, upon seeing this, the Huddled Masses will return and all kick the Homeless for secretly infiltrating their group? No. That part we don't hear. All that is heard are whines from unrealistic liberals who adhere to some egalitarian concept of unity, probably based on their one encounter with a Wretched Refuse, who they more likely than not mistook for a waste basket.

........

Editorials should give solutions. And those are not easy. Aside from taking down the sign or at least planting a lot of tall bushes in front of it, we can only be tolerant and soft-spoken. Even in times when those Huddled Masses happen to be huddling in front of that movie you can't get into.
Perhaps one day some other country will put up a bigger and more offensive sign.

Let's hope so.

Some really good points above by all posters.

I have always liked reading well written history. I am not a buff,I can't remember dates and names but do remember stuff that I have read.
Most people don't like history. "It's boring" dead stuff. But we have proven over and over that we make the same mistakes again and again.
And we still do. Every great civilization seems to have hads its demise for the same reasons.

If not the same reason(s), parallel ones.

But ours seems to have devolved into one of simply refusing to take any responsibility for ones actions, blaming others for everything, and taking credit for anything possible whether correct or not. It's the me, me, me era and it's one that's encompassing all generations and all strata of society. Not one is immune nor innocent.

I agree I also think that ALL political parties in this country are equally at fault.
I cannoy\t see that one is more to blame than the other. They seem to say the same things in different ways.

Ditto on that. I'm just not smart enough to figure out a solution that fits all the demographics and problems.

We may be taking part in the crumbling of our society these days. I know I mention this too often but I'm old enough that it will probably not affect me much. However many of you that take part on this forum may have many years of many problems to live with but the ones that really concern me and that I worry about are our children, grand and great grand children and those that did not cause these changes. I realize that my grand children may be part of those trying to force change in our society that they think will be better for them. We have seen, historically, many changes that were meant to help all people but over a period of time help just a select group that have become little different from the elite they replaced.

Your conversation makes me wonder what my parents' generation thought was happening to the country as all us "War Babies" and the "Post War Babies" were growing up and gradually taking over.

Pretty much the same - it's always the other guys fault and the younger generation is to blame.........except the older generation has had all the time and resources, and the supposed responsibilities not to make a mess. Point your finger wherever, but at the end of the day it's almost always the guy in the mirror that has some of the blame.

And it was part of that older generation that Drafted the baby boomers and sent them off to some God forsaken country. I don't think we have totally recovered from that MESS. Nobody around to take responsibility for that MESS

The same boomers that sent young people to Kuwait, then Iraq, then Afghanistan, then Syria. We, as a nation, have been sending young people off to foreign lands to fight for a very long time, mate, either conscripted or volunteers. Sadly, it’s become what we do. I lost friends who were packed off to Southeast Asia, too, but it’s been 45 years, and they would say it’s time to move on.

My sense is that my generation, the boomers, has largely withdrawn from the game to enjoy the “well deserved” fruits of our labors, leaving the dregs of our generation to fill the vacuum. We shirked our responsibility and now we find ourselves adrift. Like the man said, look in the mirror.

Nope, we’re leaving a helluva mess.

I am NOT old enough to remember the late 19th or early 20th century but I at one time did read a lot. I mentioned earlier that I liked reading history.
The following is "paraphrased" somewhat. I just don't have a better way to say it.

Russia was ruled by the Czar and many thought that he was unfair and was holding back the general populace. So the populace revolted and dispatched the Czar. The rebels took over and there was a brand new country ruled by the people. Soon the people found that there was little difference from the
time of the Czar, just different people in charge.

Now I know that is very simplified and much has been skipped. Today we have different groups in the country that purport to be working for the betterment of the country and many are doing just that. But they are doing that with out much understanding or care for what has made our country as great as it has been and will continue to be. I do think that there are outside influences involved that are beyond my understanding. Any solution to the problems of our country are way beyond my abilities but I do hope that some one or group can find ways to change without destroying the whole country.

Hope is eternal.

"Listen, years ago I rode with Juárez against Emperor Maximilian. I lost many chickens but I thought it was worth it to be free. When Porfirio became President, I supported him – but he stole my chickens. Then came Huerta and he stole my chickens. Then it was Carranza’s term, and he stole my chickens too. Now comes Pancho Villa to liberate me and the first thing he does is steal my chickens.(…) What makes one different from the others? My chickens don’t know. All over the world revolutions come and go. Presidents rise and fall. They all stole your chickens. The only thing to change is the name of the man who takes them."
