GG1 with issues

Postby ScaleCraft » Sat Jul 25, 2020 12:11 am

Repaint, it appears, scratched, chipped, floor/frame rusted, but the stripes:
They are too low on one side. Three stripes above ladders on one side, two on the other. Top curved stripe at ventilators comes back 1/2 way on one side, 1/4 on the other. But wait! There's more!

Dry transfers get picked off. One side especially to the right side of the ladders (both) the stripes are gone for, oh, 1/4" or so.

Things you watch for on repainted GG1's. No telling what it was originally. And the green on my monitor is nothing like originals.
Looks like brush touch up on the sides of the roof a couple of places. Looks like paint lifting several places. See the window just below the e-unit lever.

Where chipped along the bottom edges...don't think Lionel used gray primer.
At $1025 bin, needs to be a whole lot nicer plus original box, methinks.

Oh, but it's cast iron!

I like the occasional partial prints in the paint job. Metallic emerald green. Maybe it spent some time in OZ?

The GG1 was a fantastic loco in the PRR and Lionel versions. I never had one because I think a loco that gets power from overhead wires looks odd
running along where there is no overhead so I haven't kept up on their prices but isn't that price a little high?

It's VERY high, period. To be a repaint and restripe, maybe it's a $125 loco with no original box and no idea what it was before the repaint/restripe.
Opportunistic Seller. "Oh, it's LIONEL!"

Suspension of disbelief. The only thing worse than no catenary is bad catenary. The mainline Pennsy electrification had 300' gaps between the support poles. That's about 4 locomotive lengths! The issue with curves is even worse. Catenary doesn't do curves. I found it easier to "imagine" that the loco was running in third rail from pick up shoes even though the prototype didn't have any. The NYC and New Haven EP-5's were equipped with pick up shoes and a "mini pantograph". EP-5's heading into GC would flip from overhead catenary to under-running third rail at Woodlawn junction. The mini pantograph was like the units installed on the GC electrics to provide power from overhead in the tight fitting/complex switches found in GC underground yard.

Geez. No wonder the TCA has pages on GG1 fakes. "RARE!" because of a faked road number? Dry transfer stripes (coming off), road numbers (not even level) and something is seriously amiss on the pilot at non-powered end. There is no plate, no uncoupler shoe or skate, not even sure what the coupler is attached to.
Looks rough underneath. One end beam hanging low. Single motor 2332, condition, tops, 1/2 asking, delivered. And be prepared to re-do it....again.
"Front Badge shows model number 2332 but this rare item has 4940 running numbers."
"Untested train is dirty with some paint loss and wear marks, but shows apparent apparent light use as even the typically faded 5 gold stripes are strong."
" Estimated at C-6 Very Good "

C-2?

This is a GOOD deal!

Seriously. Lettered as a 2332, but it isn't 70 years old.
Lionel 6-18314 Century Club 2332.
Note no e-unit lever through roof, and both trucks geared.
Yeah, electronic e-unit, but MagneTraction and dual motored, 1/2 to 1/3 what they are going for elsewhere.

Buy it quick!

I think that's a Williams engine, not a Lionel. That looks like a Williams snap on pantograph.

Hadn't seen a Williams numbered 2332. I'll look!

I had to really look to find a green Williams 2332 GG-1. Found one.

No way. Roofs clerestories look different, lettering on sides different (fuel oil, water), couplers, pickup roller assemblies, so...K-Line? Matches Lionel description for a TMCC GG-1.

Given Lionel's penchant for stamping "Lionel" somewhere on their products it seems odd that this one is "clean", not even on the undercarriage/pickup roller assembly?
