Worlds longest locomotive, the rare uber-obscure NYC A-3.1428 simple articulated (Brooks 1929) with long distance tender. Built for coal service on the Charleston sub, unfortunately buckling the bridge over the Ohio River at Point Pleasant on it's first road assignment, scrapped soon after on site at Nitro WV. after the company discovered the division had neither a turntable nor wye of sufficient length to spin it, its boiler sold to the War Department as a backup power source for a munitions plant in western North Carolina.

Wonderful photos. Outside third at last. Fifty bucks of scrap brass there, anyway. I love the ghost handrails. And the stealth headlight. And the front cylinder lines to nowhere. The detail on the cab roof vents are something to behold. Clearance Gauge for an ex-something engine with nose hung air pumps is gonna be tight on the NYC. 0-8-8-0, yes, 2-6-6-2, yes.....but, no.
Besides, a NYC A-3 is a bit smaller...like a whole lot smaller.

No damage. Okay, I'll bite. Fresh coat of gloss black paint because: Running boards fell off. Badly rusted and corroded inside tender floor....paint, new screws, new brass drawbar. Pizza plate rivets at rear of smokebox.
Steam dome? Sand dome? Each dome seems to have a sander pipe exiting it, and it sure looks like they are reversed. Probably happened when the seller took it apart to paint it. Nice welded cab and firebox. At least no pizza plate rivets. Hand reverse under cab, field wound, you can see open frame.
Really fetching back end of engine. Not sure...are those supposed to be cab seats sitting outside the cab? Special drawbar pin and mount there.
Holes in the back of the cab for grabs...but none there. Holes in the back of the roof mounted air tanks...but no piping.

Dupont de Nemours & Co were experimenting with using locally processed nitro-cellulose from the on-line plant in Belle, WV as locomotive fuel, purportedly it worked well as long as the stoker was used and hand firing was kept to a minimum.

Thanks Dave actually there are some more interesting smaller power listed by this seller too. Seriously.
Dollar to doughnuts though those roof mounted tanks are weights to keep the engine truck on the rails. I'm periodically surprised at all the homegrown variations of the Hines chassis and boilers.
I've seen a few that are IMO the visual equivalent of the Heimlich maneuver, and I've seen others that are truly works of art..
