Dry Transfers. First photo, look at the lettering on he LH side of the tender. "O" is noticeably high, maybe the "N" behind it.

Now, if that had been mine, I very well might have done the coupler conversion on the pilot. If I needed to do rear, it would have gotten PT-1 Lionel postwar trucks with pickup rollers. I may have repainted and re-lettered, but not as Lionel Lines.

This is a nice-looking engine. I'd definitely buy it, if it was cheap enough. I'm pretty sure it'll bring a lot more, than I'd be willing to pay.

I'm not a prewar guy, and I have no interest in restoring anything, just to make money. But, If I knew the finish was original, I'd feel that it should be restored. It's definitely that nice. Then, it should go to a responsible collector, or museum.

If it's a repaint, I wouldn't redo it. I'd keep it as is, and play with it. I prefer the white numbering on the cab, to the silver I know was used. I might replace the motor with a 1655/1656/1101 one for more pulling power, especially if I put a bell mechanism in the tender. In any case, I'd replace the sliding pickups with the roller type. I'd also replace the fast angle tender truck wheels with postwar ones, keeping the needlepoint axles.

Dave,
Sorta looks like a PRR Lines West loco to me.
The tender was once probably lettered Pennsylvania Lines.
But you knew that.

Regardless of some folks ideology, if I am going to take an old piece and mess with it....bits I take off go into a small box, labelled, stored on a specific shelf (like the open frame field wound motors, wiring and reversing switches on my SC engines) for future generations. I probably would not have kluged up the drawbar like that, nor done those trucks. Re-lettering would have been straighter and more consistent to portray originality, if I even kept road name.

Runner Quality, have no problem with that, but try to find the original bits to fix that. Might be a stretch.

I actually have part of a Lionel 0-4-0 like that. Cab, floor....whacked off the boiler, attached to a shortened (Belpaire GONE) 675, just to make an 0-6-0 since I could not then or now afford a B-6.

No loss.....horribly bent cab roof on 675, class lights broken off 0-4-0......and there were no other usable bits for the 0-4-0 when I got the boiler in the bottom of a box of junk.

I've thought many times, about buying an LTI B6. They came down enough in price, to be affordable. I don't know how much they go for, now.

The Lionel 0-4-0 is an O gauge reduction of the scale B6, just as the 226 was a reduced Hudson. It's not a scale PRR 0-4-0, like the K-Line A5, but it does have 1/4" scale proportions. That's one reason I like them.

I have an MPC 8635 0-4-0 engine, which I bought without the matching tender. I didn't know the tender had the reverse unit. Oops. No big deal, as one can use a rectifier and regular e-unit. I have a box of old Marx slopeback tenders. The engine shell is nice, but I've still thought about modifying it. Cut of the cast-on handrails, and the fireman's side running board boxes added for the 1615. I don't like the way the can motor sticks out. Again, I might substitute an 1101 mechanism.

There ya go. Hand letter your repainted tender with Lionel-style dry transfer individual letters, so you can make the words lay not in a straight line!

I see the listed 0-4-0 went for $88, plus shipping.

The prewar 1662 switch engine was not that good of a runner. It had sliding shoes and the 2 I had always had problem going through switches. The post war 1665 and 1656 with their small rollers were much better engines. The ones I have run much better through the switches. :)

My favorite small Lionel switch engine is my prewar 201 0-6-0 that I picked up at the 1979 TCA convention at Disneyland.

Probably my favorite is my prewar AF 429 but it does not have a front coupler on it.

I am enamoured of 225E's. Postwar was 675/2025, but with added Belpaire. None had front couplers.
My 675's are 225E boilered, less feedwater, with functional (but dummy) front couplers. We used to run on the LOTS Modules, double header, helper 60% back in tonnage, and a helper in front of the caboose. Blew some minds.

As for B6 switchers, American Flyer and Gilbert HO had them, too.

Here's the Gilbert HO B6:

Full size photo: https://thumbs.worthpoint.com/zoom/images3/1/1216/03/1962-american-flyer-gilbert-ho-30710_1_48cb3090afcadef0ae96229602095b16.jpg

These are all die-cast, unlike the S gauge models. Also unlike the S gauge version, the HO models came with both three and five digit numbers, as they were introduced earlier. Only the Pennsylvania models came with smoke and choo-choo.

IMHO I am glad that Dave is posting something about any kinf of model TRAINS.
I enjoy most of what gets [posted on MTJ but sometimes we get a little too far from trains and modeling.
The posts by Rufus that cover scenery, buildings, etc., I think are appropriate along with others of the type.
