I stumbled across The Queen's Garden last night, on PBS. It's about Buckingham Palace Gardens, in London. Beautiful to watch, and you'll learn about the flora and fauna, the garden's history, and royal garden parties.

I see that IFC is an AMC channel. I get AMC, so I'll check to see if I get IFC. Also, both AMC and IFC have Dispatches from Elsewhere, which I kind of like. As for AMC, I'm very fond of Better Call Saul.

I was surprised it was Truman, though I had a slight inkling. I ,too, thought it was Eisenhower, though I was tempted to say Kennedy. (I was too busy being an adolescent at the time to have paid much attention to such things.)

When I was a kid, soda came in glass bottles. I remember going around to the neighbors and collecting the bottles, then returning them to the store for the deposit money. The early plastic bottles were labeled "No Deposit, No Return". Well, they've returned. Actually, they never went away.

Why can't they put deposits on plastic bottles, and re-use them? I bought some green tea in gallon bottles, and subsequently used the bottles for many years to keep refrigerated water. If the handles hadn't eventually broken, I'd still be using them.

They can - just takes using the right kind of plastic that can be re-used. A lot of the waste we saw in that show was single use plastic. Never intended to be used more than once and intended to be disposable......except it lasts forever.

Stores can refuse to accept returns on products they don't CURRENTLY carry, aka you did buy it from us but we dropped that and now you can try to find someone else to turn it in and get your dime back. In Michigan beer bottles are covered but not hard cider? Wine has no deposit. Pretty sure there is no deposit on spirits in Michigan as well, doesn't matter whether its a glass or plastic bottle.

Yup. It's all over the map w/o any consistency thanks to various lobbyist groups.

I recently got a notice from the county on recycling glass and why we should not bother - recycling company dose not want it, has no use for it, and it impedes separating and keeping the plastic that they do recycle "clean". We separate everything for pickup and it all gets dumped in the back together of a truck. The execution of recycling is very poor.

City of Burbank has a recycling center off of Flower street just north of downtown. They have a line of full size dumpsters that are labeled for different sub categories, corrugated cardboard, newsprint, magazines. Two kinds of glass (not counting deposit stuff they weigh). Several categories of plastic. This is drive up. No ID required. The city does curbside bins for homeowners with extremely broad categories (garbage, yard waste, "recycle").

We now have to take our alkaline batteries to township office for disposal. I am pretty sure that Lithium Ion has to be held by owner till annual hazardous waste day (which may be canceled due to Covid19 concerns (aka held for two years).

It's getting way more complicated and as you noted, a lot of it gets lumped back together on the back end and then is buried with the trash anyway.

Worse if you saw that show we were discussing - they are burning the plastics.......nasty toxic stuff.

I was reading an article the other day about those cities that banned single use plastic bags at the markets. Now with the pandemic the markets won't let you bring in your reusable bags because they can't be guaranteed sanitized.

I also noticed that some Starbucks was not letting people bring in their own cups. Back to single use cups.

Wow, that's an interesting update, sir.
So, if a market has had its single-use plastic bags banned by now , and it now won't let folks bring into the store their own cloth bags, what is to be done - folks carry every item , like canned foods, out loose in their arms?!!!??? Or shall we tie-up/knot the ankles of a pair of old sweatpants and slide the groceries into the legs?!
