I admit that I went to college in the dark ages, 1952-1956, in Kentucky which was not far from those ages also.
At an assembly every fall, attendance required, the president spoke and would announce that "There are trains going east and trains going west
and buses going other directions. If you don't like our way go your way out of here". FWIW he had the longest tenure of any college president in
the state, @30 years, and still holds that record.
