That grand structure is a pleasant reminder that the railroads, back in those days, really liked grandiose stations, didn't they. Wow. They must have made a traveler feel like they were arriving at or traveling to somewhere important , and that they were seen as important to the RR. Nice. indeed.

There used to be a lot of very nice homes in Mercersburg. Some are still there, but I'm not sure about this one....

I've noticed that from the photos but had nothing to compare.
Industry? A place away from the big city for those with money? Etc.?

There was money there historically, a lot of wealth was in the surrounding area, some escape maybe, James Buchanan was born just up the road a bit, Mercersburg Academy was and is there still.

The house speaks volumes about family pride, pride-of-place, and position in the community. I hope they were all happy and lived long, prosperous lives, with that proud home as their base.
