Stucco, or a parged surface treatment, used to be fairly common around here. You don't see it much anymore, probably because it's not necessary and it requires a fair amount of time and skill to make a job of it. Numerous old homes here (north-central Maryland and south-eastern Pennsylvania) got the treatment to protect/repair their exterior walls which were built using the relatively soft brick made locally. The house next door to my childhood home had a stucco exterior, but being built around 1940, I think that was more ornamental. Most of the other houses in the hood were simple frame construction.

One builder in bucks county had to shell out all most $300,000,000 for faulty stucco. Every house they built required a new north face walk.

Looks like a can or something on top of a hitching post.

The rail that ran between them seems to be missing.

I think that's originally a colonial era inn and that's stone facing. Note the strong horizontal lines and rough texture?

I don't recall any cases of ivy attaching itself to stucco the way that the side of the structure is covered.

Depends on the type of ivy and the texture of the wall. A neighbor down the street has a stucco wall (stucco over concrete block) which is, per his words, "infested" with a particularly aggressive type of ivy. He's actually pulled bits of stucco loose from the wall trying to remove the plant. A couple years ago he used a blow-torch to get most of it off, and it's been slow to come back. I've got some of the same stuff growing up an old oak in my backyard...I've given up trying to get rid of it. It'll probably kill the tree.

Looks like those posts have crude metal caps tacked over them to keep moisture from rotting them off.
