Not sure that they did get dressed up - that might have been just normal for going out in public then.

Lime green spandex was not yet invented..........

Even lime green spandex can look OK on some people. :)
Of course some other colors are even better.

While true, rarely seen, unfortunately,

I like the boy who stepped out front of everyone to see what-was-up with the camera guy, classic, curious, adventuresome, mouth slightly agape, and a bit of sauce to his approach to what's in front of him and behind. He was probably an interesting boy.

Being 6' at 12 yrs old, I'd say I was pretty adventurous and somewhat bold, I suppose, but while I would have been right up front, investigating, I am sure I would not have stepped in front of an adult like that, keeping off to the side a bit, I believe..
Murph
(I'd include a photo from 1957 but can't post it here. I tried.)

Actually, my answer would be here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RawE7mwXTa4

I've seen that 12 year old picture, Murph.
You were about a foot taller than me at that age and I think you still are. :)

I was thinking that Murph was the lad in the white shirt and dark tie further back with arms akimbo,

Nah, he's too silly and petulant. And a bit chubby-ish. Plus, I never stood with arms akimbo, an affect of self-entitlement.

Building still stands (originally built in 1899) and is still a dormitory. Renamed South Hall. Facade is pretty nice, sides are a little weird. Why have window bays that are bricked up?

Presume you refer to current status? No idea at all.

Yes, current status. The window bays were originally bricked up. There is also a fourth floor that is not used or not shown on the campus info map. The fire code changed and they had to add a "first floor" landing, apparently in the old days the students on the "ground" floor could just jump the last 6'-8'.

Ok, well, I used to drive by that campus now and again, but not recently. Wilson nearly dried up and blew away, and then made a comeback to continue to survive.

Nothing next door, either side. I suspect it may have been a design change after they were well under way in construction. Possibly they were concerned about heat loss form those cold Pennsylvania winters? If they had thought of that before hand they may have made the end walls solid brick. It just looks weird.

Maybe walls were needed to put beds or closets against.?
