#913 would be one of the WM's Lima L-1 Mallets. I've seen another photo of this wreck from the opposite side dating it around 1912, but that can't be accurate as the L-1s weren't acquired by the WM until December, 1915, and January, 1916. From the angle in the other photo, I couldn't tell what locomotive, even the type of locomotive, was involved. Chewsville is on the WM's old mainline east of Hagerstown.

Coincidentally, there's a copy of that other photo for sale on eBay now (but at too stiff a price to consider):

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Postcard-MD-Chewsville-Western-Maryland-Railroad-Train-Wreck-Eng-913-RPPC-S8-/124044037893

I should dig out the trade journals and see what the details were on this mishap.

Yes. I looked up Chewsville.....

Yes, some of the Laughlin ones that I've not ever seen before are on eBay starting at that kind of price. I gave up on most of the CVRR ones years ago - way out of my budget!

I should dig out the trade journals and see what the details were on this mishap.

I'd be curious to know what flips one of those Mallets on its side like that.....

That's a good musing. I wonder, too, what could have been powerful enough or obstructive enough to derail an engine that heavy.

I wonder what the W means on the bass drum above the picture?
Probably nobody knows today.
The piccolo player seems to be younger than the others.

"Watermelon"? I say that due to the female pictured under it. Is she perched in a watermelon? Maybe that was a big local crop for their community.

The band is classic, every one of them, and them collectively. Super.

That's a cacao bean, not a watermellon. No idea what the "w" stands for. It looks like it was added, aka print is not in the same style.

Might even have been added by the photographer during processing to mark a specific person.....

I got only four rolling-eyes for that watermelon interpretation? You're not slipping, are you Rufybabes?

Wel, anyolways, that was fun. I found the cacao bean interpretation intelligent, paying attention as it did to the further detail of the location, although that would make the female seated figure some sort of sprite/spriggan (right up your alleyway,) or tinker-bell .
Clever guys. Fa' real. :D

Possibly they liked having an excuse to dress up. Except the younger boys who hadn't found out yet about girls.

Not sure that they did get dressed up - that might have been just normal for going out in public then.

Lime green spandex was not yet invented..........

Even lime green spandex can look OK on some people. :)
Of course some other colors are even better.
