Re: Are Mall's History
Retail on the ground floor with good sized multi-level parking with apartments on second and third floor (and 4th, 5th, 6th...) are what new construction is around here. If it's not apartments, they are $800k+ condos.
The owls may indeed not be what they seem but still serve an imperative function: they remind us to look into the darkness.

The city of Alexandria, VA just had one go up. It was under cunstruction; here are a few photos that a friend sent a link to:

We were on the phone talking about it while it was burning; he lives about 200 yards or so from the fire ground.

It's one of the the old PRR mainline. I recognize part of the catenary.
Once I built a railroad, I made it run,
Made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?

Re: Are Mall's History
Savannah has two traditional malls with one near the southwest edge of town near an army air base and the other older one several miles north in what is usually now referred to as mid town. The first mentioned is probably 75% empty with a Target, a Dillards, an Outdoor World and a small food court with little else. Its close seems near. The other is @ 85 % full and has pretty good patronage most days. The non enclosed mall with connected buildings arereally going strong in several areas around Savannah. Old downtown, like so many downtowns, has made a big comeback with most buildings having upstairs apartments that stay rented as it was in the old downtowns. I am just reporting and have no explanation.

No PRR. It's reading's old line. R5. Run by SEPTA. 1/4 from the end of the line. Those condos sit above a toxic site. I grow up next door. For years a furniture repair guy dumped his waste there. It was used for rail siding. Old coal bins and sand. On the end of the siding was an Ice house. Gone in the early 80's.
On weekends SEPTA Packs their yard with trains. 5 tracks filled. Trains start pulling out Monday 3:30-4:00 am. It's safer for SEPTA to keep trains there.(Doylestown). Less vandalism. 1.2 million dollar condos. A stones throw from the railroad tracks.
