Good point. it's new so people, having already factored flu into their lives, are worried. It's obviously additional deaths beyond the flu, so that's bad. No one knows how much it will spread and the ultimate costs in lives and disruption. The flu fatality rate is about 0.1% and this virus seems more like 2%, which is not good if this is the way it plays out.

In answer to Roger's question, this is a RNA respiratory virus much like flu. The best way to protect one's self is to frequently wash your hands and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth after contact with others, such as hand shaking. Masks are unnecessary outside of health care settings or in the presence of people who are sick. People who have respiratory symptoms such as cough, sneezing and/or fever should avoid others and stay home, not go to work or public places.

Good news potentially is that in Thailand, a combination of drugs used against flu (oseltamivir) and HIV (another RNA virus) seems to have an effect on this virus. If this pans out, these are easily available and not fabulously expensive drugs.

Nothing like a nice little pandemic to shake things up.

Im glad you mentioned this. I wanted to post about in the morning. I think it’s BS. Something appears real fishy. Why is this getting so much attention? 35,000 people apparently die in the usa from the flu. Now 400 die world wide an it’s a pandemic!

It's just getting started ramping up and it's basically closed down China. Film from China essentially makes it look like a ghost town country compared to the normal status.

As Neil noted, the rate of fatality is an order of magnitude greater than the flu.....an order of magnitude over the flu would be 350,000 dead in the US. You might want to remember that the flu epidemic of 1918 killed millions. The PHS is already mobilized.

Fortunately, we do have a lot of anti-viral drugs already available, and in at least 2 instances that I am aware of are already showing promise.

Ran this by a few, did you? Can't underestimate them now, no. Just you watch out for that one sheep named Harold.

All right, I'll be watching.

Did I ever tell you about the time I inadvertently, sort of, stepped into a bull's corral, in Upstate NY ? Well, we had a difference of opinion. You know who won.

Similar to the the flu with respiratory involvement but with other complications.

One word.
Once I built a railroad, I made it run,
Made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?

What will be changed:
I'll be very, very curious to see if The Hairdo-in-Chief will be delivering a "State of the Union" address, or a "State of ME " address, tonight.

We shall see (for as long as we can bear it, at least.)

C'mon, Murph! We know you're a Never Trumper. Can't ya just let it go? Who of the Fab Four of the 'Crats do you like? Either of the two communists, the Indiana mayor, or the 47 years of doing nothing Biden?

I don't dislike him. In fact, it occurred to me he might be just the right guy to checkmate the aggression that comes out of the Middle East and one particular religion at the USA., or precisely the wrong guy who will deliver us to the next stone age. However, life is complicated, and I simply think his hair is ridiculous (let us know when you start wearing your hair like his [I used to wear my haircut like President Kennedy's] ) and that his narcissistic lack of any humility whatsoever is very low class and embarrassing to us as a country.

And bedsides , after the speech, he will let us all know how very very great it was and how his every move and moment has been better than any previously in history. So I won't have to think too much about it. He'll have decided for us, giving very clear direction on what should be thought. Ain't dat nice?

To answer your reply on a serious note, I am starting to look closely at and to listen carefully to Mr. Bloomberg .

Good to hear from you, Mitch. I was hoping you'd contribute some thoughts here.

If he were to be the nominee, we'd have to give very serious thought to who his running-mate would be, IMHO .
