Pennsylvania state is trying to take over Philadelphia school district. It has been an on going fight. Philly school district had a few closed door meetings about reopening these schools. Somehow. The teachers union did secret air quality test. Results were off the charts. Union leaders were able to get these schools closed.
School district claimed everything would be clear by the end of Christmas vacation: teachers won’t go back to work and parents refuse to send their kids go. Both the district and union are fighting over who can now test for air quality. A lot of students have missed 5 weeks of education. You should see the line of lawyers outside of these schools. Parents are claiming aboard on lawsuits.

This was in reference to Philadelphia schools, if I remember correctly.
Maybe if the schools were fixed and the kids were in them things might improve in Philly.

Costs a lot of money to remediate buildings to meet today's standards. Asbestos is just one issue. HVAC systems probably need replacing and there are probably deficiencies in the fire/smoke alarm systems, etc., etc., etc.....it's just not simple and it costs lots of money. Just tearing them down is also not the solution due to the same issues. They demolished a building on campus near mine a few years ago - that took over 18 months to take down.

Paraphrase of a quote from the movie "Chinatown," which seems to fit dysfunctional US cities.

Maybe so. But how did they get to be dysfunctional?
By the way, I have no functional idea how to fix the schools.
( Except one and it would not be acceptable. )

I'm sure that someone will be able to affix blame in some irrational fashion w/o accepting any responsibility for where it belongs.

Interesting looking group.
What does the star and crescent flag represent, I wonder?

Thought that the crescent moon and star flag was Turkey?

From the history of Shinglehouse Pa
http://www.paintedhills.org/POTTER/Shin ... story2.htm

A good band, with colorful uniforms was the pride of any pride of any Pennsylvania community at the turn of the century, and "Shingle House' was no exception.
The "Shingle House" Band, dressed in its finery, would march in local parades, play at the local concerts and participate in the community band competitions around the state. Likewise, the local baseball teams were cheered on by the community.

I think there are several today but at the time of the photo Turkey is the most likely one.
