Recommendation Wanted for Gluing Styrofoam

Postby G3750 » Sat Dec 14, 2019 12:12 pm

All:

Any recommendations for a strong glue for styrofoam? I've tried the Woodland Scenics Foam Tack Glue (ST-1444). It's less than impressive.

Thanks,

George

George

Weldbond. Its about the best PVA you can get in the US.

Spread evenly with a piece of card and weights or clamps for an hour.

Locktite power grab family. Non solvent based, you can get toothpaste sized tubes (3 oz and 6 oz). Ultimate even works on wet surfaces. Will not melt extruded polystyrene. Soap and water clean up.

I think the only things it won't glue are polypropylene and acetal resins. The later two require specialty superglues that include "debonder" pre-treatment to actually roughen up the plastic at the molecular level.

i used Elmer's wood glue. Home depot has it by the gallon. Then i ran a few drywall screws into it.

Yes, I agree with Ben. I've used tubes of Liquid Nails in the past and it has worked well. It doesn't have a long shelf life, however, once you've opened the tube.

My attic access scuttle is in the garage. I built a new "door" for it by using 3 layers of 2" thick styrofoam glued together. Gravity holds it in place, as the top layer is larger than the scuttle. Liquid nails has held this contraption together for over a decade (probably jynxing the whole operation stating that), and gravity is trying to pull it apart, which is probably not the way you are intending on installing your foam if it is model railroad/ toy train related.

Liquid Nails makes numerous formulas, and I do not recall which one I used. I want to say it was the crafts recipe; whichever one it was it said on the tube that it was safe for foam. The original recipe does not say it is, or at least it didn't back then.

Hope this helps,

J White
