I saw a lot of real T1s and never saw anything like that.

then the silver nose would be prototypical of an engine that has had its nose replaced but not painted yet. [opinion]

As for the "odd green," many people see DGLE as black. I suspect the lighter shades are chosen by manufacturers to help customers see that it is really green. [guess]

I see GG1s as green and T1s as black. I have to consider that film, digital images, computer monitors and my personal color vision all bias the true colors in some way. Based on discussions of DGLE it is obvious the color I see is not the same as what others see. This dress is an example, what color is it?

I will give you the answer: It is Royal blue and Black.

Does anyone disagree?

Wayne,
I have seen several DGLE painted locos that must have been new paint jobs that when looked at from certain angles did have a greenish tint.
Most look just dirty as most PRR locos were. I never saw a T1 without paint.

You've got me beat Roger, I never saw a T1 or GG1 in person. I did see and touch Monon #32, BL-2. How many can make that claim?

Roger, what color do you see that dress as?

Wayne,
My eyes are bad but I see a medium blue and black.
I have also seen and touched a BL-2.
Maybe the same one as you.

I guess the nomenclature is "BL2." I am shocked  to find someone else who has been up close and personal with a BL2. I found Monon #32 at the Kentucky Railway Museum, now located in New Haven, Kentucky.

Thank you for reporting on the colors, Roger. If everybody sees blue and black then I can't make a statement about how we see color and why we argue about the "right" color for a locomotive. I hope someone else will report on the dress colors.

It's black and a blue to my eye and on my screen - lots of variables right there and more depending on the camera used and its settings. It's also over-exposed and so I can't really tell if that's a "royal" blue or what.....

GG-1's when freshly painted were

a) Glossy
b) Black with a slight greenish tinge

The glossiness faded over time and the greenish tinge became a very dark grayish green as the copper salts in the paint were sulphated over time. It was not uncommon to see various tints on the locomotives moving through NY Penn Station back in the early 60's. A freshly painted loco vrs a freshly washed unit vrs one that was neither. I have a couple of Morning Sun publications showing GG-1's at Sunnyside in various shades of DGLE (aka Dark Green Locomotive Enamel).

It's hard to imagine how dirty NYC air was at that time. You could actually see the particulate matter floating around. I remember seeing subway cars that I thought were painted Hershey's chocolate syrup brown were really a green color. They were so encrusted with grime they looked dark brown.

The most astounding thing about the G's were how quickly they could move and do so with little or no noise. No humming, no whining, no mechanical sounds whatsoever. About the only advance notification was the "singing" of the catenary. A kind of eerie slicing sound that preceded the appearance of the engine. EP-5's that frequented the station sounded like corporate jets, they roared and whined any time they were running.

Made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?

Roger has pretty much nailed it. Looking down on the Enola yard from RT 11/15 they looked pretty much black at a distance, but if you look at EMD builder color photos of F7's there is a tint of green coming off at various angles.

Never saw a T1 that I was aware of.

Dress colors are black and medium blue.
