It's ALIVE

Postby Jim K » Tue Nov 05, 2019 10:58 am

It’s ALIVE................................. IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!!

Quick Igor! Reduce the voltage and lower the operating table before the storm energy rises and we damage the beast!

CNS & MRR line car 606 is now running from either the overhead line or the center rail! Nothing like a 50 or 60 year old Pittman motor and
trailing trucks for motivation (which are still a bit gimpy at times I admit). I believe I can say we have reached the end of the trail on this
year long project. Whew. Many thanks to Alan Heuer for the sweet wood cutting when needed and the encouragement from everyone else.
We are now in maintenance mode, which may even be more trying. This was a kit-bash of a Labelle traction motor. This is my second Labelle
encounter and I really, really, really, think I am done with them for a while. 8)

Train and Traction ON!

Really looks great. Thanks for posting the photo's. Really like the roof details!

Made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?

Chuck,

Thanks. The roof detail was pretty difficult even to obtain. I could find no information on it and all the
shots, like always, are looking up! A modeling friend who has collected equipment for decades heard me
talking about this and said: hmmmmm, I may have a model of that! A week later he shows up with an HO
brass model of the 606. He let me keep the model as a reference. So every once in a while when I needed
a bit of information I would get it out. I studied the roof quite a bit. I'm close but not quite true to the real
one. Actually from the photos I have (some from CERA) I think that the roof was reworked big time from the
original production. I almost went with Pullman Green on the color as the original one was definitely that.
They changed to the orange though like always.

later.........

But the end result is "sweet." Well worth the effort in my mind.

Do your power and pickup trucks look like these?

Yes, they look just like that but I painted them flat black.

So what's the source of these trucks?

I finally was directed to a fellow from the East Penn Traction Club. Had to admit I was a 3 railer
and asked for help. He had switched to scale and so had an old pair of motor and trailing trucks.
I was happy to get them. I also have two more motors obtained at the Hoosier Traction Meet but
no matching trailing trucks. I'm working on cleaning those up as they are in need of lube, etc.

Ok, but what brand are they is what I was interested in knowing - sideframes look decent.

I could find no name on the drive motor or trailing trucks. na-da. I think Pittman would at least
get a conversation started if you were trying to locate some side frames...........

I used to have a couple of the old Pittman drives that they made for the LV express baggage / freight motor. Yours look simialr but not the same, but maybe they made several types over the years.

I believe Pittman made a couple different styles. The one I have in my LSE Traction Motor is smaller than that in the 606 workcar.

Jim,
Looks and runs very nice.
Maybe you said and I missed it but is the power from the overhead or third rail?

Roger,

It can take power from either. There is a switch
on the bottom where you can select which. It
was using the overhead for the video. In general
if overhead is available that is what is used.
