So their time together became a family for them. It is that belonging that I assert I see among them; it's in their eyes and individual and collective bearing.

Well, it might have been all the family that they ever had as well.

Nice card. The process of hand-coloring photographs during the first few decades of the 20th century has always intrigued me. My mother-in-law worked in a Baltimore shop where she hand-colored photos for customers, and her description of the task seemed just short of producing a water-color painting. Wallace Nutting made a fortune mass-producing hand-colored photographs, and they remain a popular collector item to the current day. Nutting printed his B&W photos, then had an army of mostly women hand color each one and frame them for sale in better department and stationery stores. Based in Framingham, Mass., a lot of folks had one or two hanging somewhere in their house. There were others (like Fred Thompson) that did the same, although in much smaller numbers. Postcards were different in that a master was hand-colored, than thousands were color-printed using a lithography process. Still, a nice representation when one considers the process.

Yes, a nice example of the colorized card. I've not seen the RPPC version of this view of Doc Seylar's, but I have in the past posted up other views of this site. Seems that a good many of the RPPC's had 2nd lives in colorized versions.

In the early days of movies, they used the same painstaking hand coloring on individual frames of motion pictures. I saw Saving Brinton on PBS recently, which showed this. Here's a 30 second trailer for this documentary:

Do you suppose the woman on the front porch in the white dress is well-corseted, or has an actual waist like that ?! :o
