Re: What on Earth...
Hondo, I'm glad you are reminding us of those atrocities because that destruction recalls those "zealots" destroying some of the statues of their own ancient culture in Mesopotamia and Babylonia. Didn't they actually pursue sculptures in a museum, using jackhammers and sledgehammers ?
What on Earth is wrong with somebody who destroys artwork , particularly irreplaceable archeological treasures?
It doesn't take a stretch of imagination to realize they would have placed targets on the world's Christian cathedrals.
Had every one of the workers climbing all over Notre Dame de Paris been thoroughly vetted regarding their pasts and loyalties and affiliations?

History is resplendent with examples of the destruction of irreplaceable archeological treasures; hardly limited to recent times, etc.

I didn't suggest it was limited to present day, not one bit.

I know you didn't. Most folks however have a hard time with thinking about events that have happened over the centuries and just discount any of it as having any importance. All that matters to them is the past couple of decades, years, weeks, minutes............

I couldn't get the video to run, but none of these folks wanted to damage or destroy the place. The Nazis, of course, could've razed the whole country, and paved it over as a parking lot, if they had wanted to.

It's true that, in the end, Hitler ordered a scorched-earth policy, which included Paris, and Germany itself.
