Elmer's white glue??? Is this sheets or shapes or what?

Structural shapes. I am making some supports for a sign that will be replaced when I put it atop a building in its permanent location. In the meantime, I need something that will support it, but will allow me to separate the two 1/8" I-beams without tearing the thing apart.

Maybe then the Elmer's white glue...or maybe a tiny dot of hot glue?

Thanks Rufus. We will try the white glue or some transparent tape.

Had not considered that - 2-sided tape.

Maybe you need to get some that aren't a hundred years old!

I use Office Depot 8.5in. x 11in. shipping labels.

Ultimately, the problem was solved by using Scotch Restickable Dots. These are 2-sided 7/8" wide clear dots that can hold about half a pound. I put them on the wood and then stuck the sign supports to them. The dots are removable and re-usable. My wife spotted them in Walmart.

They worked beautifully yesterday. I put the sign on its base, transported it to the NMRA Division meeting (1.5 hours), displayed it, and brought it home. I got 2nd place in the Bring-N-Brag!

Good to know.

Avery has a well-guarded secret, Avery labels have a Shelf Life of two years and a Service Life of 10 years.

That does not mean you should throw your Avery labels away two years after purchase, it just means Avery will not guarantee they will stick to anything two years after manufacturing date or, if stuck to something within two years of manufacture, will not stay stuck more than 10 years.

The manufacturing date is printed down the 1 side of the packages. If they are really old the Avery Logo on the package gives a clue to age.

Edit: Added location of date code (Thank you, Rufus.)

I hadn't thought about those. I use them at Christmas time to hold different kinds of decorations.

Mine are nowhere near that old. And, a planned failure date is not a surprise as they do want to you to buy a pack, use 1/3 and then after x years you toss the old and buy another......not dissimilar to the printer cartridge sales plans. The money is made on selling cartridges, not the printer.

The manufacturing date of Avery products is unknown but the Avery Logo on the package gives a rough clue.

Date printed down the 1 side of the packages in italic black for that date and again mine are not all that old.

Still this also then raises the questions about the adhesive(s?) used in peel & stick parts (windows, doors, roofing....) laser cut kits - how long is any of this stuff good for before it fails. Convenient for the manufacturer and makes unique stuff...........that falls apart........someday.

Elmers makes a spray called Craft Bond that supposedly can be used for temporary bonds or permanent ones. I've used it successfully, but only for permanent bonds. I bought it at Walmart.

Given your need George, I'd ask at an art supply place.

Thank you for locating the date code.

I don't think it is a "planned failure," it is just the nature of many types of glue.

In addition to shelf life, Avery says sheet labels should only be fed through a printer once. Their guarantee of jam-free performance extends only to a sheet of labels that has been through a printer a single time. The tight paper path of a printer can cause the label to curl after multiple passes through the printer. This could cause the label to jam or peel off inside the printer.

Yes, I feed old sheets through to print another single label and yes, I have had to pull feeds out of printers to get the labels that did not stay on the sheet off the rollers.

One thing I learned about Avery labels is that there is a removable version and a permanent version. It's actually on the box. I didn't realize that when I used them on plastic ID labels for electrical wiring. A few years back they started to fall off the plastic labels. We will be doing something different and permanent for Panhandle 2.0.

We have digital cameras now - take pictures of it all and annotate each in Photoshop, and store on computer and in back-ups. When I re-did the electrical at my place in Pa, I took photos of all of the electrical that I replaced and re-did in a step-wise manner and stored that all to show my son and whoever if they ever have to make any changes.
