For how much? Was not clear on actual amount. How much really got used in charity?

Tiara given to the United States

Pope Paul wore his tiara a number of times in 1963, before, in a dramatic act in November 1963, laying it on the altar of St. Peter's Basilica in a gesture of humility to symbolise the papacy's surrender of any claim to temporal power. He never wore it again. It was announced that the tiara would be sold and the proceeds of the sale given to charity. However, Francis Spellman, Cardinal Archbishop of New York City intervened and arranged instead for the tiara to be bought by the Catholic Church in the United States in 1968.

So, it never really changed hands at all and still owned by the Catholic Church. So, zero is what went to charity......

It would seem the answer is $0.00.

Ya' know, I knew that face reminded me of somebody. Now, I got it. You're right. There is a similarity. Maybe they were from the same gene-pool.

Can you see why Pope Paul VI abjured the crown. Not only was his Triregnum awful in design, but from his pontificate forward, no Pontiff has accepted one, no matter the design, even declining being crowned (with anything) at all. It is not currently part of papal regalia. They - John Paul I; John Paul II; Benedict: Francis - have accepted the office by uttering the historical word, "Accepto," and by having a Pallium placed on their shoulders.

Pope Paul VI's tiara weighs 10 lb, in contrast to the 2 lb weight of the previously-used Tiara.

But there is a more important reason Paul VI gave up his tiara.

Since the Pope holds not only spiritual authority over the whole Church but also temporal authority over the Papal States, a crown is not necessarily inappropriate.

Pope Boniface VIII (1294-1303), who tried to re-exert papal authority over the rising secular monarchs, added a second crown to show his spiritual and temporal jurisdiction. (The secular kings only had one layer in their crowns.)

So, the kings added a second layer to their crowns. You and see it in this photograph of King George VI. The higher the crown, the higher the authority of the wearer.

Sometime after the pontificate of Pope Boniface VIII and before the death of Pope Benedict XII (1334-1342), a third layer was added to the Papal Tiara forming forming three crowns called "the triregno."

Pope Paul VI made many changes in the attitude of the Church, symbolized by giving up his tiara altogether. Pope John Paul II prayer at his inauguration carried on Paul VI's guidance that the Pope should be a servant, “Christ, make me become and remain the servant of your unique power, the servant of your sweet power, the servant of your power that knows no eventide. Make me a servant. Indeed, the servant of your servants.”

Curious coincidence because I was at the dentist this morning and saw a "Whatzit" as I was leaving. It is not a tooth.

Next hint:

Plant/flower part, maybe the pistil? Maybe a snail/slug's antenna base?

Yes, one of those Chuck.

MurphOnMillerAve wrote:A cactus spike/needle and its root/base ?

What?

Rufus, maybe, he grows cactus indoors. Roy, definitely, all the nurseries in Lakewood carry cactus. But Murph? Congratulations, Murph, you are the last person I thought might get it. You don't have Echinocactus Grusonii (Golden Barrel Cactus) in New Jersey.

:D I have no idea how I "knew." I just felt it, somehow, never having ever really been near a cactus, that I recall.
Thanks!

Well, I sure saved that photo, knowing full well I will never get to be that close to any cacti. And if I were, I'm sure I'd put an eye out.
Thanks, again.
