Political Correctness (and I wish this weren't true) is one of the biggest problems facing America. When you are no longer able to voice your opinion or describe history, events and situations factually, you are being controlled. People are being taught to self-censor.

Charlton Heston once described political correctness as "Tyranny with manners".

I've also seen it described as "Sugar coated Hate and Intolerance used by hypocrites and fools to suppress free thought and speech".

Both are apt, in my opinion.

It's nice you have decided to tackle this subject, guys. And bold. That encourages me to relate a story to you that happened to me a short while ago.

An acquaintance who knew I taught inner-city for many years, asked me, "Is it possible for a Black man to speak without saying 'You know' ? Is it possible for a Black athlete to speak without saying 'You know' almost every other two or three words?"

I had no idea how to answer my inquisitor.

Now, I've been paying attention more carefully when an African-American male speaks on TV, to see - to hear - what I could hear in this regard.

Does anybody have any advice or perspective on this for me to consider?

Jimmy Kimmel is a heavy critic of conservatives,Republicans and Donald Trump. The left wing media and Democrats are dredging up the past of all the Republicans they can in order to eliminate them.

Proudly crass, racist, and transphobic, the show also celebrated chauvinism by treating women as disposable f**k puppets.

Sexism on The Man Show was so blatant and over-the-top that its creators could easily invoke the defense that it was all a hyperbolic send-up of male entitlement. But Kimmel has never been made to answer just how he thinks groping women on camera, making fun of their weight, mortifying them on the street, and objectifying them on trampolines functions as "satire."

The Man Show’s premiere begins, dramatically, atop the Hoover Dam. After speechifying about the brave efforts of dam workers (all male apparently), Kimmel and Carolla proudly proclaim, "just as these heroic men did 60 years ago, we are building a dam: a dam to hold back the title wave of feminization that is taking over this country; a dam to stop the estrogen that is drowning us in political correctness. A dam to urinate off of when we’re really drunk. We call this dam: The Man Show."

Jimmy Kimmel needs to be held responsible for his past and have his show cancelled.

Roseanne and Ms. Kelly were not getting paid to behave badly. Their actions cost their employers money so they were terminated.

I don't recall ever hearing Colin Powell say "Ya know".

The core issue is when the facts are selectively applied or used out of context to bolster an opinion or to actually distort information. In many cases this is less about evil intent and more about 20/20 hind sight/rose glasses syndrome. The good old days were more old than good. People behaved just as badly but it was much harder to find out about it because we did not have instant mass communication.

Opinions are not at issue per se. You are still entitled to your opinions. You are still entitled to express them. What has changed is that there may be consequences for doing so. All societies have boundaries that are defined by laws and social mores. If you chose to live within a society (which you can chose not to) part of that social contract is accepting those boundaries. Those boundaries are subject to change over time. When they do, you have a choice, adapt or move on.

If what you say or do serves no purpose other than to cause harm you probably shouldn't say or do it. If you are trying to relate something from the standpoint of historical perspective you lead with that. This is what competent authors do. The information is prefaced in this context and does not come off as an excuse or afterthought. Offense can be taken when non was given or intended.

We rarely see the world through other peoples eyes or having walked in their shoes. Unfortunately it's within our nature. We "assume" everyone else is like "me/us" and when they aren't we go on to assume there must be something wrong with them and then it's ok to behave badly. I suspect that the millennial viewpoint that "everything is about me" is making this worse.

I think I knew that, but those points hadn't come to mind when surprised by the inquiry. I'll be paying closer attention to such considerations, I suppose, better ready for the next time I come across Mr. Inquisitor.

When I taught Pubic Speaking, as one of the Language Arts curricula, I cautioned the entire class not to use such "fillers" as You know, Ah, Er, a-well, or to make a grunt, or stick the tongue out between lips, all only considered as phony ways to give oneself time when thoughts are too slow for what is being said, prepared or spontaneous. Using "Ya know" never occurred to me as something somehow related to race, gender, or ethnicity, but rather as evidence of inexperience or poor preparation in formulating pertinent thoughts of value in the conversation, quickly.

The one I love is "Uhmmm". We would record the senior design classes final presentations for ABET accreditation purposes and I was the camera man. I had an unofficial uhmms's per minute scale for evaluating the presenter(s).

When we started doing this 15 years ago most of the students at the time had very limited public speaking experience. As video chatting and now YouTube are the "norm" most of the students are actually quite good at this. We even had a few that could have moved on to infomercials if they decided that they didn't want to be engineers. One guy was up there moving around and pointing at the screen, his colleagues, the audience like he was in a Broadway show!

It's difficult to talk about Ms. Kelly without sounding totally condescending. Her entire career, what I've seen of it, seems best characterized as one-step-forward-followed-by-two-steps-back. She's had a number of opportunities during her relatively brief tenure, and has consistently failed to rise to them, IMHO.

At the moment, I am watching a CNN report about the shooting in a synagogue in Pittsburgh, and I have been keeping count, somewhat, of how the woman (Fredricka Whitfield) seemingly in-charge of the news desk discussion uses "Youknow", and I have noted her use of "You know" at a rate of two utterances, plus a couple "uhmmmm"s , per three sentences. The presentation is live, so I must admit my estimation of her is affected by her need (habit?) as a professional to speak using such fillers to help her express herself.

The yaknow count has just been modified: 5 in 2 sentences, the first one occurring after the second word in the first sentence. Even my wife , unaware of this conversation, commented upon hearing the news woman commentator speak just now, "What's wrong with her. She seems to like her youknowz."

Megyn Kelly was a rising star at Fox News. her program had high ratings, she had a running battle with Donald Trump and she is big in the #metoo movement. Andy Lack wooed her away from FOX with a $69 million dollar 3 year contract. Big mistake. She never was and never would be a fit for NBC.

She was a critic of her own network (NBC) for sitting on stories about about Harvey Weinstein and Matt Lauer. It's just my opinion that they used her asking if black face was racist as the excuse they needed to terminate her contract. I am not a fanboy for her. She will come out of this a multi-millionaire and now she can stay home and raise her children. Her career is over.

The point I am making is "what is good for the goose is good for the gander" You can make all the excuses you want for Jimmy Kimmel being parody but then Al Franken was forced to resign by the Democrats for his previous comedy that didn't even come close to what Kimmel has done.
