HONDO74 wrote:Can a good Muslim be a good American?

This question was forwarded to a friend who worked
in Saudi Arabia for 20 years. The following is his reply:

Theologically - no.

Because his allegiance is to Allah, The moon god of Arabia.

The claim that Allah (the name of God in Islam) historically originates as a moon god worshipped in pre-Islamic Arabia originates in early 20th-century scholarship, most prominently advocated by American evangelicals from the 1990s. Some scholars have argued that the epithet "the god" was first used as a title of a moon god, but this is purely "antiquarian" in the same sense as the origins of the English word "god."

How many Americans give allegiance to God? Which god? There are so many gods, who even knows the name of the god they worship?

Saturnalia was an ancient Roman festival in honor of the god Saturn. The popularity of Saturnalia continued into the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, and as the Roman Empire came under Christian rule, many of its customs were recast into or at least influenced the seasonal celebrations surrounding Christmas and the New Year.

Rosh Hashanah is a Jewish holiday marking the first and second days of the Jewish year.

I do not believe Muslims think they worship the Moon any more than Christians or Jews think they worship Saturn. Satan, on the other hand, probably throws our Christmas and New Years celebration in Gods face.

What did Jesus say about who to give allegiance to?

Acts 5:29 New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (NRSVCE)
29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than any human authority.

Based on Acts 5:29 I pose the question, "Can a good Christian be a good American?"

The answer to that might fully depend on what the definition is of a "good American".

I doubt that that is easily defined and might be a bit of moving target depending on who you ask.

I think you might also have a difficult time with defining a "good Christian", too.
Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hopes that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

You are right, right and right again. Probably why talking about religion seldom ends in any agreement. There are exceptions, I just agreed with you.

I don't find that surprising; just rational acceptance of fact.

Does this Dead Sea Scroll fragment make a statement concerning God's name (highlighted)?

If it were hi-lite'd when they unrolled it the 1st time, that might have some good impact.

I think the Jehovah's Witnesses highlighted the tetragrammaton in the image to make a point concerning the importance of knowing God's name.

Joel 2:32 New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (NRSVCE)
32 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved;

Seems the Jewish and Christian religions of the world that removed the name of God from their versions of the bible have done their followers a great disservice.

That it is not there does not mean it cannot be called upon......get up out of your chairs, open your window, stick your head out and yell

There have been bad lip-syncs and there have been terrible lip-syncs, but that one is easily in the top 10 of worst ever!

Did fans actually enjoy him as much as he enjoyed himself? Just the total energy involved in all that cheek-sucking-in and finger-snapping must have been consuming.

So, he certainly was his own Statement.
Good contribution to the thread, Rufus!
