What's New on the PRR Panhandle 2.0?

You're welcome. I went to use the old one and when I finally got it open, the batteries had leaked all over the insides. The bridge spans are black and seeing well enough to fit them together with the small nuts and bolts is difficult. Then it occurred to me that in a few months (if all goes to plan) I will be under the layout doing wiring. So it was time for a new headlamp.

Harbor Freight was running a special; this was $9.86.

The way George is modeling that area is really fantastic.
The bridge is like a postwar Lionel loco model with dimensions
altered a little especially length.If the bridge were modeled at
full scale length it would be quite a bit larger but IMHO this
model gives a really nice model of the bridge and the Ohio River
valley crossing. If I remember correctly this was where the first
crossing of the Ohio was. I think this may actually be the third
bridge built on this site by the PRR or a component part.
The backdrop leaves nothing to doubt because it IS the Ohio River Valley.
My home town is @ 25 miles south. There were four more railroad
bridges in those 25 miles. One was removed in the 1960s I think.This was
an exciting area to be in during the mid 20th century for someone who
liked railroads and large and small industry.
This is why I hoped to one day be able to see photographs of the layout
George is building and expect to recognize many patrs of it.

And yes, this is the 3rd bridge across the Ohio at this point.

Haven't gotten a ton done over the past couple of days. Yesterday I managed to get through a retina exam without needed laser surgery!

I spent some time gluing the Chooch Large Cut Stone segments (allegedly peel-n-stick ) back onto the stone arch.

I also reworked the RR-Track plan of the river area to show the bridge piers and widen the river. For Panhandle 1.0, I used a rippled (tempered) glass sheet (approximately 6' wide) for the river surface. The new, more prototypical and more accurate size of the river (8') means this is isn't going to fit. I am likely to try selling it. I expect it will make a good river or lake for some layout somewhere.

Updated 9/3/2018:

The man with the soldering skills (my younger son) was in town with his family over this Labor Day Weekend. So I made him labor!

He fixed some broken wires on one of the Lionel Industrial Smokestacks that I had cannibalized to make two tall stacks. I now have 2 tall stacks and 2 short stacks. All have lights that flicker and all smoke (somewhat anemically in the typical Lionel manner). I suppose that if they produced smoke prototypically, all attendees to the layout would have lung cancer and not be able to see 3' in front of themselves.

Today, I completed 10 bridge shoes for use on the Ohio River bridge. Tomorrow I will put together their pedestals.
