A Lotus Seven or a Caterham is another critter. An absolutely amasing drive, and you'll be laughing uncontrollably once you get one handled. Incredible thing to drive fast, possibly the most fun I've ever had on the ground with my trousers hitched.

I have been driving this 1964 Jag MK2, RHD with Brit spec 2.4L for 10 years this month...as a daily driver (taking the 1950 Ford Tudor out every other weekend and the 1950 Ford F-1 sometimes).

well...all Jags of that era were SAE except for BA threads on some very small fasteners. I got into a real whizzing contest with the JCNA (Jaguar Club of North America) when I read their judging guides for MK2's.
Six bleeding months to get them off their high horses (and I have ALL the e-mails)...and I could prove my thesis.
So...this car has single exhaust, twin downdraught Solex carburettors, no fan shroud, no spring loaded "jockey pulley", manual sliding lever choke..and the list goes on. But the most fun is cops. They do all sorts of odd things when to their eyes there is no driver...

Show clubs can be so annoying in their "expertise", and I must admit not being a fan of the whole show scene in America. Seems like all the faux-toffs want to pretend some social status as befits Pebble Beach Concour, the wives want to dress and pretend they had anything to do with and have some sort of ownership in the work the poor guy put in the restos ( given it isn't just another chequebook resto), and the car is nothing but a way of acquiring trophies as a measure of self-worth.

I like how you roll, drive 'em every day, maintain them, fix them, live with them. Thats my world, too.

BTW Rex, about Whitworth. You'll find most British cars went the SAE route in the sixties on until post BL (then saw the automotive world go with metric), though the little bits often have BA threads as Dave mentions, for a very practical reason. The largest market was the North American one, so production detail was geared to that segment. Typically British, though, the SAE boltwork throughout for that reason, yet the crosshead screws are Pozidriv rather than Phillips from mid-sixties on or so. Go figure! Grin!

I guess if I was to put $20k in a racer, I might rather a full-on Midget, earlier Mini, something like that. I'm not a fan of tech in cars, if I'm honest, or maybe I could stand an MX5 (a poser car I absolutely loathe). Sure, these might be faster because of the tech, but there is something about that old saw that is very true; "Its not about how fast you go, but how you go fast."And how prepared you are to do over-the-road repairs, using your traveling kit of points, condenser, fan belt, Whitworth wrenches (!) etc. To say nothing of the cachet of diving under the "bonnet" to perform an emergency repair.

Might be fine for a young guy for whom that's all he knows, but a little too boy-racer for me. Now, a Caterham/Lotus Seven, there's a kitcar I can get my heart around!

Fair enough, because you could buy the original, "pure" Lotus Seven as a kit.

Welcome Corvette Robert. My new toy for 6 weeks. Had a 1961 back in 1970/71, that only cost me $750, but it was very unoriginal. Daily driver finishing up college and then sold it for a more comfortable car. They cost a lot more now.

The guy across from my mother’s house has 62 fuele soft top. White with red interior. Now for the kicker . Less then a 100 on the clock. He bought on a Thursday from reedmen’s. Drove it to vargo drag way on a Friday .Blow the rear first pass. He had the dealer pick it up at the drag strip. They told him sorry no warranty on the dragstrip.It’ been sitting 55 years in his garage. Still with a bad rear. robert with a dot.

Yes, this is a 1962 and very original, which can be a 2 edged sword. Paint is okay and looks great from 20 feet, but it's original to the car and 58 years old, so there are little paint touch-ups in many places. You can tell the paint is original (what the experts tell me), as there are the typical paint stress cracks around the radio antenna, some emblems, etc.

It has most matching number parts including the original 327/300HP engine, tranny and rear end. Interior has brand new Al Knock seat covers and the springs and padding was install new at the same time, along with new carpet so pretty sharp inside. So, for a 58 year old original car it's pretty nice.

No hardtop yet, but looking, as that it the way C1 vettes look their best IMHO. Hardtop on or top down. Soft convertible top just doesn't do the car justice.

The other side of the sword is the cost of parts and at 69 it's quite a bit harder doing my own work. I really appreciate the simplicity of the systems, but my old body just doesn't want to contort to working under the instrument panel or bending over the fenders to work on the engine. Just pulled the carb and had it rebuilt and have it back together except the fuel line that is dealing me a fit.....seems a previous owner semi-stripped the threads, so that might have to be replaced too. Cleaned up the engines with "Simple Green" which was not available back in the day and it looks great! Now I have to troubleshoot the temp and fuel gauge, which aren't working.

I actually was a 50% owner with my son in a 2018 GS. Fantastic car that is the fastest I've ever driven. and with the traction control and stabilization systems anyone can drive it without losing control. But, it just didn't do it for me. I'd see it in my garage and although it was beautiful it was not what I was looking for. I wasn't looking for a new, super sophisticated, race car. I wanted an older vette like I dreamed about as a kid and admired all my life. Just looking at this 62 sitting in the garage puts a smile on my face and does the same for the wife, who was against it.....she loves it now. Makes us both remember what we thought were better and simpler days.
