Here's a recent photo of the first house we had in Whittier, between 1961-67. It hasn't been kept up for many years, but at least the front still looks the way I remember it:

Rufus, you're right about this place having a lot of promise. Someone associated with Whittier College built the place. It wasn't the president, as there is a house right on campus for him/her. It may have been the chancellor. Anyway, it's at the top of the hill overlooking the school. It has quite a view.

The balcony is off of what we used as the guest bedroom. To the left were servant's quarters with a separate stairway and entrance. Below that was a workshop.

Roy, your family must have been very well off financially to live in that house in the 60s. I wonder how much it it worth today. Maybe a few million dollars ?

At the time we bought it, my father was in charge of operations in the western hemisphere for a company which built oil infrastructure. The people who bought the house from us took good care of it, even putting a pool in. Now, and for many years, the place has gotten very run down.

Speaking of big homes and hometowns, almost every town up and down the rivers around Pittsburgh had a library donated by Andrew Carnegie. This one had an Olympic-sized pool in its white tile and marble basement natatorium, and wonderful stacks of books and reading rooms on the mahogany and walnut-lined and furnished main floor. These libraries were second-homes for thousands of readers and thinkers.

HONDO, How did you come to know all that? How do you know that is the Carnegie Library for Duquesne? There were plenty of those libraries, and plenty with that general style of architecture. Homestead. McKeesport.
