SOTU
It’s time to scrap the State of the Union speech.
What was once a useful and, at times, much needed yearly update to the nation and the world has evolved into a partisan, mudslinging sideshow that is not only rarely informative, but now consistently insulting to the goodwill of the American people.
Over the last twenty-plus years, the State of the Union speech has become nothing more than the president of the day – be he Republican or Democrat – addressing a gathering of 535 increasingly petulant children throwing temper tantrums on the taxpayers’ dime.
Imagine. No more “boos” from the floor of the House of Representatives where the “Joint Session” of cry-babies gather. No more screamed insults. No more crossed-arms with frowns. No more collection of out-of-touch spoiled members of the opposition party refusing to stand when the other collection of out-of-touch spoiled members of the president’s party cravenly jump to their feet for an “in-your-face” staged standing ovation.
The American people would finally be spared from this rude and abusive spectacle forever more.
Even if the elected brats of Congress behaved with the manners and decorum which should accompany their high office, the State of the Union would still mostly be a waste of time.

Re: SOTU
I fear it's required, mate. Article II, Section 2 of the United States Constitution provides that the President "shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient."
Now what did they mean by "from time to time"? Sounds rather casual...

At one point in time is was just that, from time to time, as Congress was in charge and the President really was not. It has evolved to become a yearly spectacle where 1 side sides on their hands and the other side cheers a lot.

There's not reason for it to be watched and no one makes anyone watch it; it's devolved into the partisan cheering/booing event that folks at home want - sort of related to watching gladiators and lions being fed Christians.
A waste of time -- well, yes. It is sturm & drang, it is propaganda and posturing, and it truly is a story being told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Eh. Americans like a good rough-n-tumble, so long as it has a happy ending (like every commercial on TV is suppose to have, no matter how short the message.) So, maybe, the speech is a commercial?

Of course it is - it's pure propaganda and that all a commercial really is.....only this come with a lot of rather nasty cheerleaders.

Aahhh, there ya go, you mentioned a magic word, Cheerleaders !What's missing is cleavage. America loves cleavage. Feature that, or at least, include it - somehow - and you will have a better chance at full attention and success at being heard (or at least, seen, with some measure of patience.)

It doesn't need to be a "live" speech and it doesn't need to be a prime time spectacle. He could send them a PowerPoint slide show as an email attachment.

So, Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan have cleavage? I can't wait to see the pyramid!

Re: SOTU
Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution does mandate that the president “Shall from time to time give to the Congress information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them…”
The Constitution does not dictate how that “information of the State of the Union” should be transmitted to Congress. But it does stress that the president only needs to convene both Houses on “extraordinary occasions.”
State of the Union addresses of late have been anything but “extraordinary occasions.”
If only because of the pouting, peevish and truly disrespectful conduct exhibited by members of Congress during almost every State of the Union address of recent memory, it’s time to retire the in-person delivery.
Mail it in, Mr. President.

Why not? The rest of Congress barely actually even shows up to work the rest of the year. It's been a do-nothing group of children for decades.
Sadly, it wont happen because Trump never met a TV camera he did not like or could not resist performing in front of......a good stretch of time to find a good book, a cold drink, and a fire in the fireplace.

Oh, he'll be there, all right, and everything related to him will be "wonderful" and the "best ever," since no other President ever did the job quite to his "amazing" level, etc.
Questions, however: (a) Will the First Lady be in the balcony? (b) will he get a haircut

I gather from expressed disdain that many watched all eight years of Soetero's SOTU.
For many of us Deplorables, this SOTU will be an occasion to celebrate #somuchWinning.

Re: SOTU
Back when Bill Clinton was president I used to listen to all his SOYUs. He was a master with words and BS. The wife and I were listening to his last one and I made the comment. I know this SOB is lying but I believe he could convince me to buy a junk used car.
Now I know how he talked all those women out of their panties.

Actually, 8 years Bush the Younger was exceptionally painful. He couldn't even read his speech off the teleprompter.
