I can vividly remember unannounced full exams...........which turned many a sophomore's/junior's knees to jelly and ended their dreams like a bug hitting a windshield at 70 mph.

Especially for those honor roll students who really didn't know squat, but sucked up to the teachers to stay in their good graces.

Unrelated to the PM process...I had an accounting professor in college who called exams "Progress Investigations". All of his tests were designated PI#1, PI#2, etc. After taking classes with this guy a couple times I learned that one needed to absolutely crush the early PI's as they got progressively more difficult (read deranged) as the semester went on. If you didn't have at least a few A's early there was no way you'd be able to absorb the skin-of-your-teeth passing marks at the end of the semester. A lot of students dropped out half way knowing they were toast...
