Best $40 Rye Whiskey?
Re: Best $40 Rye Whiskey?
Yes. Long time storage in lead crystal will leach lead. Filling a lead crystal glass with wine and drinking it will not leach lead.

We keep rye, bourbon, and some scotches in ours.

Here's one for you: When I was a kid, I liked a candy named "Southies", a rectangular solid, green colored, mint flavored item made by "The Squirrel Nut Company". A while back, I took notice that almost all the old penny candy from when I was a kid still existed/was available. Turns out the "Southie" had been acquired from the Squirrel Nut Company by NECCO (New England Confectionery Company). The local grocery that I shopped at carried a bunch of Necco products, but NOT the "Southie, whose name had permutated over the years from "Southie" to "Squirrel Nut Mints" to "Mint Julep Candy". I asked the local grocer to order some and even though they carried a bunch of Necco stuff, they said they could not get them. About 6 months later (around Saint Patrick's Day) they magically appeared, only to disappear once that batch was sold out.
This won't help you but there's a candy joint on old route 30 (Lincoln Highway) heading toward Rufus' PA place called Mr. Ed's that carries a wide assortment of stuff rarely seen anymore. My Catholic school days hooked me on Bonomo taffy and Ed carries all the flavors. He also carries alot of other stuff quite adept at removing fillings, crowns and bridgework, Squirrel Nut Zippers being one of them. Next time I'm up there I'll try to remember to look for your Southies.

Yeah, and penny candy is now $.25 or more, even when you can find a reasonable facsimile. Bonomo Turkish Taffy was great, but responsible for much dental work in its day, just like KitKat's. I've found that Vermont Country Store carries a fair selection of the old candy, but you have to buy it bagged in a small quantity for exorbitant prices and Robert is right.......it seldom taste the same. I guess we just have our memories.
I can remember when $.25 would buy you a bag of candy, a bottle of pop and maybe even a comic book (which I never bought).

I can remember when you could get a 2 x 3 piece of flat bubble gum wrapped with a sports card for a penny. Sometimes there were other types of cards. I had a whole set of WW2 aircraft cards. A 6oz bottle of coke for a nickle. Big candy bars for a nickle.
One of my favorite places in the 50s was the Knots Berry farm general store. Back then I got hooked on Licorice Root. 5 cents a stick, would buy 25 cents worth, that would last me a month.

True and a slow process dependent on the acidity of the contents.

Late 40s early 50s when I collected them. Most were American planes. My favorite prized one was the F 86 Sabrejet.

Robert, Hondo, and Roy, Thank you for the info/links about lead crystal. I'll take it as definitive and cease serving from them. Thanks again.

Necco Wafers (didn't like the pink ones). Juicyfruits (didn't like the green ones). Milk Duds (too good to spit into each others hair at the movies, but it sure was tempting). Licorice whips. The little two sided, bulbous pastel-colored flying saucer-like things that contained sugar beebees that wrecked your teeth. Bit-o-honey (esp. adept at removing fillings, Healey). Charms. Charms suckers (lollipops). Pep-o-mints. Caramels individually wrapped, approx. the size of your eyeball, that had a center of white sugary-powdery stuff.
