A further note of perhaps some historical interest:

Many if not most conversions of Max locos by Fred were commisioned by the late Tony Ambrose. Chances are very good the loco was at one time his; a large and eclectic collection with little space given over to things that did not run to his standards, and he did run them. No shelf queens.

I have a Max Gray PRR J-1 that has an Icken drive. Much nicer than the original fabricate Max Gray gear box. I purchased this engine probably 30 years ago and it is still waiting for me to finish re-detailing the boiler. It is my understanding that the tender is about one scale foot shorter than it should be and that many years ago Ted Stepek cut one of these tenders in half side to side and added a 1/4 wide strip of brass to lengthen the tender! Wow! I can live with the original as it is.

Aren't they welded tenders? Should be an easy task.
